Simple question..... has anyone had beer since their transplant? I'm 16 months post kidney transplant. A neighbor next door came in from out of state with one of my favorite beers (not sold in our state). He wants to bring one over and enjoy one with me. I have not had one since transplant so just not certain. I can't imagine drinking one would be a problem but you never know.
Just curious as to what others have done. Thanks!

Yes, I have drunk alcohol in moderation since my transplant over 22 years ago. I enjoy a pint of beer every week with friends. Everything in moderation. You have a second chance at life, enjoy it.
As long as your docs say ok, enjoy a toast with your friend! Moderation, as others have cautioned, tho. I have had the occasional glass of wine or beer in social situations and been fine.
Yes,i have had the occasional drink,as long as the peticular meds you are on dont interact with alcohol but i think most dont in moderation but just ask you dr
My wife had the transplant about 3 years ago now. She drinks in moderation either a small beer or wine etc with no problems. You had the transplant to save/extend your life so enjoy it.
Ask yourself how much you would enjoy a trip to the emergency department for a medication interaction. Ask yourself how much you enjoy not having dialysis. There’s a sticker on the box of my medication that says “Avoid alcohol while taking this medication.”That label is there for a reason. It’s not a suggestion. It doesn’t say “Avoid alcohol except once in awhile.” What other things the doctors told you not to do - eat sushi, or have rare meat, etc - are you going to start doing anyway because you enjoy it? No I have not had a single drop and do not intend to.
It is OK for transplant patients to drink alcohol in moderation. No, you should not be taking any medications using beer or wine (that's what that bottle label means), but to say it is a contradiction to drink "any alcohol" is incorrect.
The safest thing to do is simply ask your doc. Everyone’s medication regimen is different and designed for their unique needs. Some of us can safely have a drink here and there and some cannot. I would not do so without a talk with your doc.
The only issue I see with beer is how it will affect your phosphorus or potassium levels. Otherwise, if you tolerate it well, I don't see the issue. As always, ask your clinic. Hope you had a good time with your friend!
I asked my transplant team and they had no problem of doing anything beer or wine if done in moderation AND if I continue to drink my water (which I drink between 90-100 oz. daily). So I won't abuse it but an a special occasion I may have a glass. Thanks everyone for your thoughts and recommendations. Have a safe, awesome and healthy Labor Day!
Another option - there are now many actually good non-alcoholic beers. Really! Totally different than the few that used to be available. I recommend Athletic Brewing Co as one of them but so many are popping up in the market I am sure there are other good ones too. I have friends who drink occasional alcohol but also like these when they want to have a social drink without the calories etc.
