Hey, I had my transplant in January and I have a bump where the kidney is, it’s so obvious and makes it look like I have gained weight 😔 it’s really annoying, has anyone got the same bump? will this be there forever no matter what I do? my doctor says it’s only visible in some patients.

Kidney bump
my tx kidney is palpable as a bump when I press the R abdomen using my hands
I have an obvious bump, but I also still have my big PKD original kidneys, so they push everything out of whack. New kidney still works great! I am 22 months post transplant.
that's interesting. I always thought they take out the PKD kidneys during or after the TP. Did yours stop growing?
They only take them out if they are too large or are regularly doing the nasty bursting cyst routine. Mine seem to be about the same size. Docs said they can shrink, grow or stay the same. Pulling them out at the same time as the TP is a much bigger operation with a longer hospital stay and recovery time.
My cyst filled kidneys (PKD) were both removed due to hemorrhaging at the time of transplant. I was the first person in the world to have a double nephrectomy, transplant conducted robotically (DaVinci Xi robot). They placed the diseased in bags and pulled them through the main surgical sight in the upper abdomen. Surprisingly, my main incision is only 4 inches long. They also placed the new kidney in that incision and moved it down for final placement. I do have 4 or 5 micro incisions used for the robots hands. However, I can barely tell were those incisions are located — scaring is minimal.
They were talking about a long incision to do both nephrectomy and the transplant at the same time. My old kidneys have not been troublesome, other than not doing their kidney job. Congratulations on the high tech removal. I trust all is well with the new kidney.
Hey, Imyellow, my bump pretty much went away (I'm 3 years post). Though the meds have made me insulin resistant over time, so actual weight gain is an ongoing issue.
Hello, I am 1.6 years post TP and had the bump. It appeared a few months after TP and lasted about 6 months. It went away as fast as it came, I woke up one morning and it was literally gone. Good luck..
Yeah, I had a transplant for 23 years and I’m afraid the slight bump remained. I’m considered to be a pretty slim person and I thought that was the reason it appeared like that. 🙃
I cannot feel my new kidney as I'm fairly certain my new kidney resides inside the peritoneal cavity. My double nephrectomy and transplant was done entirely with the DaVinci Xi Robot at the University of Illinois in September. I was told before hand that the kidney, in this type of surgery, would be place in that location. My main surgical sight, four-inch incision in the upper abdomen, isn't even where the kidney was placed. They actually "scooch" the kidney down into the lower abdomen.
I’m just over a year post and a fairly slim female and there’s a definite kidney bump - the kidney is large, from my brother who is over six foot. It works like a charm but I definitely feel self-conscious in some clothes. It’s larger in the evenings! My doctor and surgeon say that just how it is for some people.
