How many liters of water do you drink??

Hello. How much water does everyone else drink for their kidney transplant? For a first few years, I used to drink 4liters or 16 cups of water. One time, I drank around 24 cups of water and I couldn't breathe. Horrible experience. Since then, I toned down alot to around 1-2 liters of water. I think I need to drink more again.

My nephrologist told me to drink to my thirst. I was in the desert and had a terrible bout of IBD - I was drinking a LOT of Gatorade like drinks. When I had to see an MD at last, test results came back and he told me to drink less - I was getting too diluted! It’s all about balance.

Cleveland clinic recommends 2 liters a day after transplant. Can I ask why so many of you drink so much more?

I drink 4 bottles of water. (16.9 oz) If you are small like I am, too much water can make you sick. I have very low blood pressure, so I have to be careful.

You can tell if you have been drinking enough water for you by looking at your labs. Your BUN is effected by your hydration. If you have not been drinking enough your BUN will be elevated. My lab 7-20 is normal.

I am 20 years post transplant and drink 1-2 liters a day, more than that in the summer

Ah I see. Didnt know what BUN did lol. Its past normal ever since my creatinine went up but this time is was lower than usual

Your creatinine and BUN kind of go hand in hand. If your creatinine is higher than what is your normal, look at the BUN. If it is also elevated, it shows you are probably a little dehydrated and should be drinking more.

I live in WY where it is very dry. In the summer, our humidity will be in single digits - 7%. Since moving here, I have to drink a lot more than I did when we lived in WI.

BUN shows urea nitrogen in your blood....but my doctor always says it shows how hydrated you are.

Take care and stay safe!

I try to drink 2 liters of water a day, sometimes I drink a little more. I am 14 months post transplant. I was on dialysis 2 and a 1/2 years and was restricted to 32 oz. a day. I got so use to drinking so little it was hard at first to drink a lot after I got the kidney.

Wow 32oz while on dialysis? I could only drink like 8-16oz. I made zero pee maybe that's why lol.. after dialysis, I drank so much water because I missed it :) but congrats on your new kidney!! :)
