I just received a transplant at January 1st this new year. What a blessing.

Most verything is coming along fine. lots of adjustments again, but that is fine also.

Trying to make sure to take care of myself and my new partner kidney, i am looking for a transplant dietitian . To my surprise it is not easy to find one. My hospital does not have one, while the surgery was excellent.

I live in san Francisco. Would anyone knows how to find one or any source? Appreciate your help.

Thank you

Ken

Most dialysis centers have a dietition that might help or talk to you transplant team, I do protein with complex carbs & cut out all or most simple carbs. I'm 7 yrs post transplant. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for your info much. I will look into ucsf and Stanford . Hopefully I can find one there.

Talking about simple sugar, since i am diabetes and my doctor said i have a catch 22 problem: need to gain weight but avoid high sugar.

Simple sugar is almost everywhere. It is not easy to avoid most of them...what is your formula?

May God keeps blessing all of us.

Thx much again.

I've been diabetic since 1989. I basically use the ATKINS diet. I do mix in fruit, nuts & occasional chocolate sometimes. My A1C is 6.7. At dialysis for almost 3 yrs, the dietition said I was the star patient. I won the contest monthly for the best albumin. I admit I cheat occasionaly. I blame it on the prednesone as it makes me crave carbs. I've never had to gain weight, so I don't know how to help there. I check my blood sugar 4 times a day. Get a carb counter book & see how many carbs are in all foods & you will be surprised. If you have any other questions ,feel free to ask. This works for me, and everyone is different. Atkins does make you feel more energy, less gas, sleep better. eliminates some pains & controls your A1C. I wish I knew about it before I became diabetic. once again GOOD LUCK

Wow. Love to learn from the best, Only way to learn.

I was lucky during dialysis, the treatment rinsed away my sugar , cholesterol , and gout problem. Maybe that is why i got a transplant easier. Lucky me

With my blessed transplant, my diabetes may come back ..but no medication yet. I want to keep it low and i will get the carb count book and doing some homework..

Talking knowing about these knowledge before. I guess This is another example of "if the youngs only know, and the olds only can"..

We are those who knows now, and with the blessed transplant, we still can...

I am 72 . This is my new life πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡

Thanks for sharing again. Looking forward to learning to you.

I don't know if I am the best, but this works for me. I have learned as much from other transplant patients as far as side effects etc. as from the doctors. Just trying to help anyone I can

It's people like you who has good heart that makes the world better and warmer. Are you a peer support person?

Drdetroit profile image

No, I'm not a peer support person, just trying to help other transplant people through my own experiences. I have learned a lot through other people & nuch reading. I am 67 yrs old

Klevqβ€’ in reply toDrdetroit

Your hard work really paid off ..i am very positive you will have many more quality times to come..

I am not eating simple sugar too much already, following your advice.

On the other hand,You must have a strong support systemm... the transplant team really looked at that during my interview.

Life is good with God's blessings.

Instead of simple sugar foods, i eat

unsalted popcorn,

no salt vegetables can soup, and

unsalted chicken noodles can soup.

I looked inti unsalted can tuna that has slight mercury.

What is your opinion and experience on them can foods and mercury..?

Thanks again

Have a nice weekend..

Drdetroit profile image
Drdetroitβ€’ in reply toKlevq

Believe it or not, popcorn raises my blood sugar so I don't eat it also because I have diverticulosis. I try to make as much of my food from scratch, but I do eat some canned once in a while. Anything in moderation. Dr. told me you do need some salt, but not too much. Be well!

Klevqβ€’ in reply toDrdetroit

I just learned that can industry is planning to rid off BPA. Hope that's true.

Hope this will benefit those who use can food on a more frequent basis.

So far Wild Planet, Oregon choice, and eden are the pioneers.

I forgot to mention to you that the diet I follow will reduce your dependence on insulin or oral drugs for diabetes. I never took insulin until after transplant as some of the anti-rejection drugs raise your blood sugar. If I stick to my diet strictly, I only take minimal insulin after 3 days

Klevq profile image
Klevqβ€’ in reply toDrdetroit

Good morning.

The med raise my blood sugar. Also the starchy food the night before the blood test raised it up more.

Lucky me, i just ran into a nurse who taught me to eat 2 eggs without the yoke. Add some apple. Yhat will avoid high sugar for the blood test.

Hope it works.

During dialysis, my a1c was at 6 with n ok insulin or med..

Thx

Dave,

With God's blessing, i just found a post transplant dietitian today. πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡

She showed me lots of

info about my blood test report. She gave me a B+ for a newly transplant of two month.

She pinpointed my unique situation and designed a diet for me... very common sense but effective...πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡

Lucky day..

Thank you for your ideas. Keep coming.

I am sure i will find one. I just Google dietitian. There are so many available..plus my previous experience give me a good foundation to carry on with this new chapter. Best luck to all of us.

I found I had to advocate for my self or nothing would get done in a timely fasion😝after a while the nurses realized I knew what I was talking about not like most if he other people in my unit they where all in their 70 or 80s and didn’t have a clue what was going g on with their healthπŸ™πŸ˜

Klevq profile image
Klevqβ€’ in reply toGotthecall_123

I got lucky when i was new to dialysis 5 yrs ago. I watched this video where the speaker tell us to advocate for ourself because the staff just doing their job. He said the squeaky wheel get the oil. So i asked them questions and i got different answers.

So i started to advocate for what i thought was correct. They then seemed to respect me more later. like you, i studied a lot and learned . I thought all these hard work did help me to get the transplant sooner, with God's blessings.

Mercury in Pacific Northwest Seafood

Klevq profile image
Klevqβ€’ in reply toGotthecall_123

God's miracles working on all of us.

I used Google to search now. Nice we got Google. Very handy if not too much information.

i'd like to ask a question about tuna and mercury. Because of my diabetes and needing to do blood test twice a week, i need fasting. If i eat too much starchy food, the morning blood sugar will be high..so i choose hard boiled egg, and can chicken no salt added.

I also looked into tuna which is fine, But it has mercury.

so far i am not eating them yet, even they have do much possible benefits. I rather not eat them yet i don't understand the mercury effects.

Maybe you can ask your dietitian while i still looking for one.?

I attached the link below about tuna and its mercury.

Please give me your opinion, if it might interest you . Thank you..

Will do, have you made any changes to eat healthier?

Klevq profile image
Klevqβ€’ in reply toGotthecall_123

Yes.

I am eating more protein stuff like about 8 eggs with 4 egg yokes per week, chicken, fish,

More fiber fruit/vegetables low in potassium, good carbos like beans,

1/4 oranges, 1/4 pear, etc. To avoud high total potassium and carbo.

I want to try skipjack tuna in a can but afraid of the mercury and BPA. Haha.

Limit to rice, noodle (carbos ) to 1/3 of the meal. Like we first learn from dietitian .

To fill in i am eating unsalted popcorn..

Please advise.

Also God gives me this kidney for a purpose (unknown). So he gives you for a kidney too. That is a purpose for you also. So share your luck and blessings with people around you.
