There is lots of good information on the web. When my nephrologist told me it was time to start thinking of what dialysis modality I wanted to choose, she gave me a quick overview of the options, PD, HD and Transplant. I found many helpful websites. You probably won’t find everything you want to know in one place. Hemodialysis has options to do it in-center 3 x week where the staff takes care of everything, home hemodialysis, nocturnal hemodialysis. PD is everyday multiple times a day. Check out the following sites to get started (kidney.org, lifeoptions.org, mykidneylifeplan.org, aakp.org, freseniuskidneycare.com, davita.com.). The people on this forum are helpful if you have questions. Hope this helps some.
The vast majority of people do PD overnight using a cycler while sleeping - freeing up their days. However, as you mentioned, PD can be done manually several times a day - but it's quite rare to run across someone actually doing that. I really like the links you submitted - My Kidney Life Plan is a favorite of mine.
The reason why home is more often is because it is gentler. In center is very hard on the body. It is common to do PD every day. When you start, plan on being over whelmed. It is a lot. But you do get used to it and proficient. YOU can do PD while you are sleeping. A lot of people do that. They set up, hook up an got to bed.
Is there a reason why no home hemodialysis? it is the best form.
I have been doing nighttime PD on a Cycler for 3 1/2 years...I have had very few problems and it has become so routine I forget alot of times that I am a Dialysis patient...
