Florida : So we have a family holiday... - Kidney Dialysis
Florida

Life is a careful balance. I am new to Peritoneal Dialysis and have had ongoing issues with hydration. I was overloaded with fluid prior to dialysis, drinking 10-14 bottles of water a day. Now, I am limited to 32 oz a day. I have two bottles each 16 oz in the frig and that is how I measure my fluid intake. When they are empty, I'm careful about any extra fluid. When out, I ask for a cup of Ice, which slows me down and cuts my fluid in half. I watch the salt and use a food diary to estimate my sodium intake each day. When it's above 2,000 I expect to be thirsty. I use my weight both before and after treatments to gage how I'm doing. Monitor for swelling and shortness of breath, check BP and hydrate carefully that's my advice. It's not easy to do all the above when trying to also enjoy life. Find time for joy.
I'm not sure how to guide you on this, but one thing I can tell you is that the heat is BRUTAL so far this year and we haven't started the summer months. It's been in the low to mid 90's almost everyday. If you guys are going to be out and about, definitely check for dehydration abd excessive sweating. I'm a heavy sweater so I do have to stay on top of my hydration.
Maybe speak to the doctor before the trip so you can Guage how much fluids to give mom. Maybe do stuff in the evenings, although it does stay warm and humid in the evenings, just not that brutal sun pounding down on you. You will have a great time. Florida is lovely except for the excessive heat.
