diabetes and dialysis

hello, the other day i was scrolling on here and seen a post about someone being diabetic and they can’t make it the full session with not eating but the nurses are giving them a hard time

i was going to suggest a boost or ensure as well as eating right before you go …

i try to eat at least 10-20 minutes before i go in the hospital and bring all my diabetic supplies with me so they know i’m serious. the dialysis machine removes sugar so they should be more understanding. i always have a bag with me and i put snacks in there for the way home as well. sitting in the waiting room while you have your snack shouldn’t be a problem for them. and the ensure is under a cup of liquid so if you are on a restriction it won’t take too much away from your daily allowance of fluids.

I have actually had my sugar crash during treatment. I keep the lance peanut butter crackers, a bottle or can of coke, the glucose tablets, hard candy, chocolate with me at all times because of the crashes. (even before dialysis).

yeah my sugar always crashes too it’s because of the machine removing the extra sugars in your body. the tablets don’t work for me that’s why i always have stuff in my bag lol

Our dialysis unit in Scotland lets dialysis patients bring in what they want. They also get a packet of sandwiches and 2 cups of tea or coffee also. The diabetic, who is sitting opposite me right now has all his goodies laid out, as if he is going to the cinema 😳........

I'm not diabetic (more on that later) and I can't make it through a 3hr HD run without eating. I bring a medium sized sandwhich, a good amount of fruit (apples or cherries) and 5oz of water which I don't normally finish and this is hardly ever enough.

Hello Renalrose having snacks is a great idea especially if you are a diabetic. I'm a diabetic too and I also bring my diabetes supplies and food to eat because sometimes my blood sugars drop while I am doing dialysis.
