Scared, confused

Hello, I am new to the community, 71-year-old female with stage 4 COPD and CKD, GFR 22. How does dialysis affect COPD? I am confused about the GFR numbers and the need for dialysis. My doctor keeps saying at GFR of 15 you need to go on dialysis. But here I see people with numbers as low 8, 6, 0r 2 just starting. Any help would be appreciated.

Overall most people don't start dialysis until eGFR of 10% or less. Studies show that beginning dialysis too early often causes loss of residual kidney function. Once your eGFR reaches 20% you can be worked up for listing for possible kidney transplant. Many get a preemptive transplant and avoid dialysis altogether.

I'm sorry to say I know of no correlation between COPD and kidneys.

Check out kidneyschool.org

It is a wonderful resource for all things kidney related info.

I think it all depends on the symptoms of kidney failure you are experiencing rather than just giving 15% egfr as the number to start dialysis. Do you have a nephrologist yet? I would think he/she would have to consult with your lung disease specialist to figure out the best treatment plan for you. I didn't start dialysis until my kidney function was 5% because I just wasn't experiencing many symptoms. I have PKD (polycystic kidney disease).
