My 88 y o mother has been on Colace 100mg 2x daily and Benifer laxative powder 2x daily. If by 2:00 pm she does not have a bowel movement, then MD recommended to have mom take Metamucil as well. This laxative regime has been effective for the past 3 weeks and has not failed her yet. The Lactulose is the last resort to take because of the side effects of feeling bloated and flatulence.
