My mam has suffered dreadful nausea but her first bout of dialysis in over three weeks, plus anti sickness pills seems to have regained some appetite and she’s kept her few bites of chicken down. As we’re still awaiting on the dieticians advice, can anyone tell me what the best foods were for you or your loved one at the start of dialysis? Thank you

Diet Tips please

PROTEIN!!!!! PROTEIN!!!! PROTEIN!!!!!!!The dialysis nurses should be nagging you about that.
I eat a lot of eggs. Mostly because I can .make them many
different ways, & its quick & easy. Steak, burger, pork chops,
fish. I usually have a salad along with my meat. Frozen
veggies have less sodium & phosphorous. Rice & pasta is easy. You can have potatoes, but soak then over night to get the starch out if them.
Then my least appealing because I can't / won't eat them is beans. If you like bean soup you have it made.
I guess I should've started with this. I've been on dialysis for
5+ years. Anything that can happen, happens to me. I have a great team that works with us consistently..
I hope this helps.
Is she on pd or hemo? I feel like more calories and protein help with discomfort during hemo. I used to eat before and during. Most of those calories would be burned during treatment. This helped me feel less drained. For pd nausea issues, it was real bad at first. Your doc may want to give nausea meds. I finally got relief from eating at least 1-2 hrs before starting. Never start treat treatment right after eating a large meal like dinner. Hope ahe gets relief soon.
My kidney count is 11 and I am not on dialysis yet. I had a fiscula put in several years ago. However, I have slowed the decline in the last 3 years thru diet and exercise.
The following diet and routine ABSOLUTELY worked for me and will work for you.
1) My daily breakfast is sliced strawberries, dry cereal from Trader Joes topped with frozen blueberries (Cosco big bag) with almond milk ( NO dairy milk) and 2 slices of of dry (lowest sugar white bread) toast. Make breakfast your BIG meal and have it as early as possible in the morning ( I have mine about 6:00 A.M.)
2) Lunch is a big salad with greens and a low cal dressing (NO tomatoes, etc.) Maybe some chicken in the salad. Try to have lunch before 11:00 A.M.
3) Dinner should be a salad with a portion of PRIME meat or turkey or chicken before 4:00 P.M. NO pizza, NO candy, minimum salt.
This routine is tough for about a week; after that, your taste changes and you won't miss anything. You'll trim down and feel better.
You also have to do something physical: walk, etc. The absolute best is swimming. If you have any questions re the diet, email my wife Claudia at claudiabray@comcast.net and she'll be more specific.

Hi... I had the same problem before I started dialysis I could not keep anything down, I would make me self a dink, mineral water, lemon, salt and lots of ice. This helps me keep food down. Hope it helps.
Thank you all so much for your advice - we appreciate your time. My mother is in a steady incline and this all helps. Take care
Hi, so sorry you guys are having issues with the diet, just like Shelbert66 said, the base of the diet is protein. Try eggs, ground meat, chicken & turkey. Stay away from whole wheat and try fruits like berries, apples, clementines and veggies like lettuce, celery, onions, carrots. Talk to a renal dietitian if possible. A dietitian can help a lot and provide some kind of vitamins as well.
