Hi wonder if someone could help me understand my blood test reading results my age is 66 years old and I had a blood test last week and results are saying borderline need to repeat test has readings for my Serum creatinine level is 119 [ 59.0-104.0] above high reference also saying eGFR is 55 consistent with CKD stage G3a That i know is mild to moderate CKD, so i have booked another blood test for next week.

What i cannot understand is 6 months ago i had the same readings on my first blood test again eGFR 55 stage G3a mild to moderate and then after another blood test 2 weeks later it was saying eGFR was 70 stage G2 mild. What i dont understand is why do i have to have 2 blood tests weeks apart why cant the first blood test give the exact result.

Hope you can understand my post in what i am trying to say because this is all so worrying and confusing to me.

Best wishes

CKD takes multiple testing to diagnose. The lab results are a picture of the day you had the lab. If, for example, you did not drink sufficient water and were dehydrated, the lab might come back with a lower GFR and higher creatinine. So ,they run the tests again to see if this was an anomaly or an actual reading. It is not uncommon for GFR to bounce significantly. The diagnosis shows only when there is a steady decline in GFR and increase in creatinine over time. I am surprised they want to test so close to the last test. But having multiple testing done is the only way to get an accurate diagnosis. I just had a lab test done that actually was so bad they sent me to the hospital only to find out that the result from that lab was totally wrong. Something had gone wrong during the testing. Opps! Hang in there.

Hi I was told that as you age your kidneys dont function as you may have been used to. My primary doctor contacted me in 2017 that my kidney function was down and she wanted me to see a nephologist which I did. I went there for almost two years for blood work and watched my GFR go from low 50 down at one time 36 which I didnt know until later .When I realized all they were doing was a blood draw to check my GFR I asked my primary to do it for me .. So every three to six months I would have a blood test . I stayed in the 50s pretty most.. My last two tests were 61 and last time 68 the doctor then told me that I really didnt need to be tested for a year.... but I am still going back for testing every three months to be sure .. Make sure you are drinking your water daily .. thats very important

Hi it can get confusing has i did not know anything about kidney function and i have had full blood count tests every year for the last 15 years for other reasons but results have always come back normal no further action needed has it was only my pee started getting foamy that i started looking into and researching about kidney disease and i have looked back at my GFR and can now see that for the last 10 years my GFR has been 60. in june this year it was GFR 55 so had another test done then GFR was 70 and then last week i had a blood test and is saying GFR 55 again need to have a retest so Just hope it goes back to GFR 70 again, all very confusing and i have always felt ok has i eat loads of fruit during the day and i walk 2 miles a day also if i dont walk i go swimming so i do try to keep active also blood pressure has always been good but i do have a few pints or few wines most evenings also have eaten lots of meat and yoghurts cheese most of my life has did not realize how much protean was not good for me until i joined this site, if my GP had told me that i had CKD i would have watched my diet and what i eat better.

Best wishes

i am also currently in 3a at egfr 50 but you have to understand it will go up and down. when i was diagnosed 5 yrs. ago i was at 36. nephrologist prescribed the right meds and got my blood pressure under control and egfr has never been that low again. however it does jump around and so will your entire metabolic panel.high blood pressure was the culprit for me in this disease which started when i was 19. i am now 70.
