What is suitable.

Hello - can I eat weetabix and blueberries for breakfast.

I had a wonderful reply from a member but I think it has got lost in the system and I can't get it back.

I also eat chia seed pudding -a slice of toast with cheese for lunch and a salad for evening.

I have to eat this way as I suffer from chronic constipation as well and this diet helps but am I really adding to the burden of ckd here. I also allow myself 250ml of skimmed milk for the cereal and a couple of mugs of tea - every other drink is water.

I never have snacks.

Thanks for reading

Ditch the cheese, as it has too much salt and phosphorous plus it will bind you if you are having trouble going to bathroom no cheese ever----- no tea first, tea binds you also. No caffeine either that means no tea or coffee decaffeinated coffee is allowed. your doctor should have you see a nutritionist as your health team please just Google renal diet it will tell you foods to avoid foods. And foods that will help kidney function too. No weetabix no wheat products, nuts or peanut butter at all..... all the berries you like strawberries, blueberries cranberries raspberries cherries in a limited amount do your research google renal diet make a list forbidden foods and goods that are allowed

I beg to differ on the tea. I drink green tea all day and have NO trouble. Cheese and other dairy products on the other hand give me diarrhea due to lactose intolerance. I drink Rice Milk, use it in cereal etc. What is weetabix?

Hello - thanks for your reply - Weetabix are whole wheat biscuits which you have for breakfast along with fresh fruit and some milk. Weetabix are very British.

Ah, can you eat them with jam? Like an english muffin? Wish I could help with the depression but that's not something I've ever suffered from. My son in law has a bad case and I think he finally found a counselor and meds that have helped him.

Can you eat popcorn? I found having some Skinny Pop, popcorn every day keeps me very regular. It's low in sodium and potassium and not many calories.

We have something that look very similar to weetabix in North America. It's called shredded wheats (original) though they don't appear that popular anymore.

fartikins profile image
fartikins in reply to Michael__S

We can still get shredded wheat here as well.

We have shredded wheat and shreddies in the UK, but they are very different in texture to Weetabix.

You did not understand my reply to him he said he can't go to the bathroom if you look it up tea is the worst thing if you are clogged up it binds you as does cheese, I've been doing a renal diet for many years and my numbers are perfect as I follow a renal diet to the t, no pun intended. Tea decaffeinated on a renal diet is fine tea also causes kidney stones I've researched this stuff for years

And we're all different in how our bodies react to stimulus. I drink 1 cup of coffee every day and then drink hot green tea the rest of the day. I have no problem with bowel movements. I've tried the plant based and can not get enough calories in to maintain my health, I need to gain another 5 to 8 lbs but veggies and fruit don't have enough calories. I tried the low protein and it dropped my serum ALB to too low of a value leading to malnutrition. I watch sodium and have for years and not my serum sodium level is too low. There is no one way every single person should eat.

thanks for that - I shall give green tea a try.

If you are in the UK most Gps are not very knowledgeable about CKD, and unless you have other major medical issues there is no referral to a nephrologist or dietician unless over stage 4.

fartikins in reply to Buspasswalker

That is so true - you really have to push for what you need.

Buspasswalker profile image
Buspasswalker in reply to fartikins

Exactly. I am going to try to go privately to a dietician as with high BP and CKD the recommended diets are at odds with each other!

It is so difficult.

I'm in USA i have a nephrologist and a dietitian when i was diagnosed stage 4 i then had to go on dialysis I'm stage 5 now but doing ok I stick to a renal diet - caffeine keeps coming up problem with this it brings your blood pressure up which is bad for kidneys if you put too much cream sugar in your coffee tea too much phosphorous so I avoid all caffinated products I do drink decaffeinated green tea on occasion when I want a hot drink it was very hard 4 me to give up coffee but I did it and my numbers on my blood tests are fine from sticking to a very strict renal diet......

Hello - thanks for your reply. That is a very helpful list.

In addition to my above comment: foods to eat or not depends on ckd stage and to always check with your doctor before changing your diet.

What Not To Eat

1. Apricots: Great for fiber but full of potassium, apricots are not ideal for those with kidney disease. The potassium content is even higher in dried apricots, so those need to be avoided entirely as part of any renal diet.

2. Avocados: For a healthy individual, avocados are nutritious and beneficial, but for those with kidney problems, these fruits can be harmful. Avocados contain almost double the amount of potassium of bananas.

3. Bananas: Full of potassium, bananas can reduce kidney efficiency. Tropical fruits in general are high in potassium, but pineapples prove to be more kidney-friendly.

4. Brown Rice: Brown rice contains more potassium and phosphorus than white rice, so it can place unnecessary strain on already damaged kidneys. With portion control, some brown rice can be consumed as part of a balanced renal diet.

5. Canned Foods: Soups, as well as canned vegetables, are popular because of their convenience. The high sodium content is what gives these items a long shelf life but also makes them dangerous for impaired kidneys.
