Scared i have CKD stage 3

Hi,

i have just had a blood test and my creatinine level was 123 calculating a eGFR of 44 by the formula they use. I am 54 yrs of age and female. I have had bloods re done today as doctors says raised levels of creatinine can be caused through dehydration. The level should be 84 for my age. I am worried sick about this. I have been sweating alot but am in menapause. I just feel that getting this my life is over . I cant sleep or eat properly at present as so worried. How do i live with CKD without being a wreck. Food is my passion and the thought of not having what i enjoy just fills me with dread. Any advice appreciated. Sorry for the gloom. I feel in total shock.

thanks anne

Hi Anne, I have stage 4 kidney disease, it is normal to feel scared, but with the right treatments, and eating the right foods, there is hope, for the most part with me, it is my energy / strength levels, otherwise I feel pretty good, and eat what I want to eat, except salty foods, although you might check with your doctor, best of luck to you, Dave.

Hi Anne, it really isn't a death sentence. You will have to change some things around, but you discover new things that you will have passion for too. I know that sounds so ridiculous now, but it happens. If you really love eating, go online and get one (or 10) of the cooking/eating with kidney disease books. You'll be surprised at what you can eat. Or better yet, see if your insurance covers a nutritionist. The hardest thing for me was (is) giving up coke or pepsi. It's like coffee to me. I'm also a diabetic. So, I shouldn't have either anyway. But it's the hardest thing I have had to go without. But if you aren't diabetic, you can have soda. Just not dark color ones.

The whole thing is a big pain in the ass but when you see those numbers start going back up you will feel a lot better. I wish you the absolute best.

I suggest you wait to worry until you make sure you are hydrated before your next tests. I see from the news that your temperatures have been really hot. Irregular electrolyte levels or lack of water can cause the GFR to drop and the creatinine to go up.

Also, try to avoid artificial sweeteners and dark sodas (with phosphoric acid), because they can damage your kidneys. I count high fructose corn syrup as an artificial sweetener, because it is so processed. Real (unprocessed) food is the best for kidney health.

Good luck, my friend.

Hi,

I have been told my creatinine levels are now normal and come right back to normal, range. The only thing I've changed in a week is drinking more fluids . Surely that wouldn't have such a dramatic effect? Off doess it show I was just dehydrated and kidneys ok? Only got this info from message on text from GP surgery. Speaking to doctor tomorrow, I'm confused now

Yes, water can make a big difference. Take this as a wakeup call and try to live a healthier life style. Good news on the newest labs.

Glad to hear the numbers are up. While the disease progresses differently for each of us, my journey from a creatinine level in the mid-40s to my transplant last July was 25 years. Proper self-care, keeping your BP under control, and yes drinking lots of water helps immensely.

Thank you for your reply. Yes a blood test to test kidney function and urine all point to me not having CkD. The gfr was a estimate with my creatinine going up ( now caused by dehydration). all my other blood levels to do with kidneys levels were normal. So blood redone after hydration and creatinine fell right back down to 80 . Doctor said that doesn't happen in less than seven days if you had CKD. So very relieved. All other blood tests on everything and ultrasound sound normal. So very relieved.
