What do you do when you are craving a food you know isn't good for you? I'm craving sour cream and onion dip and ruffles potato chips or Lays sour cream and onion chips. Of course I'm at work so I'm snacking on red grapes instead :)

What I do is plan and track my diet for the day and see what I can work in. Davita.com has a good tracker.

Try hummus and celery and or apples. Good crunch, has some fat in it and since you are not diabetic, you could also have pita chips. Popcorn lo salt or no salt is also good for snacks.

Dairy maybe. I know the chips are bad cause all the salt and they are super processed.

It's not the sour cream, it's the sodium and potassium in the c hips.

My Neph tells me to go ahead and have something I am craving...but to eat well the rest of the day.. He says denying even a small amount creates people to just binge on it

Yep! That's why I say moderation. only buy small sizes and ration.

I JUST WATCH MY LABS AND IF THEY ARE GOOD THEN I EAT LESS BUT PRETTY MUCH WHAT I WANT ALTHOUGH I HAVE CHANGED MY DIET TO INCLUDE MORE KIDNEY FAVORABLE FOODS

I agree. Indulge once in awhile, but when I do its a modest amount. Then, I'm good to go. I think a lot depends on the individual. Once I have a little, I'm satisfied for awhile and as funny as it may seem, I usually think these chips and dip arent soooo great. Best to you....

I disagree about indulgences like that, an alternative is preferable because once you think you can get away with breaking the rules, you push those boundaries and hurt yourself. Instead enjoy apples, grapes, watermelon, plain popcorn with no-salt seasoning and rice-cakes always look at nutrition labels and portions to avoid what you need to avoid.

Not an indulgence....Just eat a little of what you are craving...and then be done with it...I find what I think I crave really doesnt taste that great after I let myself have some and I dont spend any extra thoughts on it after that.....I believe my Neph and PD Nurse are correct...

Moderation. Don't buy a big bag, get a snack size and ration.

Hi horsie63! This suggestion may not be the absolute healthiest, but what I do when I crave that stuff is, I either buy the unsalted potato chips, or unsalted tortilla chips, (if I’ve gone a good long while without high potassium foods) and I just use regular sour cream with added plain, dry chopped chives to it. It’s really just a very low-salt version of potato chips with sour cream and onion dip.

I know exactly how you feel. Sour Cream & Onion potato chips were always my most favourite chip flavour to snack on. And my suggestion above doesn’t even come close honestly, to the real thing. But unfortunately, it’ll have to do. If I try to consume the real thing, I can get very sick. This is the only part of the journey that is difficult for me - the reinventing of the savoury snacks! It’s one of my many weaknesses! Lol! I hope this helps. 😊👍🙏

Yes, definitely what jodaer said! But also, sour cream being a dairy product, is also (unfortunately), high in potassium.

Eat a tiny bit for the taste. You don't have to have the whole bag.

I managed to tame the craving and bypass eating the chips...lol. Let's hope next time works out well also...lol.

We have to remember that each of us is different and we need to do our best and let others do theirs.

I get No Salt potato chips (crisps) at the supermarket and I love them.

It's not just the salt but the potassium in potatoes I have to stay away from.

Me too! I like the unsalted Miss Vickie’s or Kettle brands so far. 😊

Unfortunately, the amount of potassium is not listed on the label.

I found this website after a Google search, because I was quite curious myself about the potassium count. Lol! I hope you will find this helpful. 😊👍🙏
