They say that CKD often manifests itself in one's nails. Splinter hemorrhages and longitudinal ridges are some of the more common issues. I get both, but not too bad.
Are the ridges only on one thumbnail but nowhere else? It could be due to some sort of trauma to that nail. Or it could be related to CKD. (I'm no doctor!)
I have pale nails and "half and half" nails and have had them for years. I had them way before I was diagnosed with CKD, when my GFR and labs were normal. I guess I'll never know why I had them years before I got CKD (I'm stage 3 now) but they don't seem to be going anywhere.
Wow..this is interesting. I dont have any horizontal ridges, but I'm going to keep a check. Do they hurt? Do they fade and return? When you said it's a measure for you as to how much CKD you have, I image the ridges come and go.
Here are some CKD fingernail issues on that link. Nails show problems from other things as well. You could ask your Dr. or Neph. or a Dermatologist is you want a definitive answer.
Good luck. Hope you figure it out. I have a lot of nail problems but mine have always been Vit D deficiency, my autoimmune disease and other health ailments before I got my CKD. I haven't noticed anything else since I went to an eGFR of 28.
To answer a couple questions: the ridges do not hurt and they are permanent. They are only on 1 thumbnail and as it grows, more ridges appear. This all happened when my numbers fell 10 points.
