What are your stories regarding finding a kidney donor? Are you guys having difficulty finding a kidney donor ? I'm doing my research on kidney transplant donation rate. Thank you.

How do you ask someone to risk their life so you can have one of their kidneys? That has been my dilemma. I feel funny asking anyone to go through this. My family is all older than I am and infirmed. I have no children of my own. And my friends are up there in ages and poor health themselves. And me asking a stranger is not going to happen either. I even have problems at my age, 67, taking a kidney that might be useable for a younger person who has not had much of a life. Currently the wait in my area is 6-7 years....... do the math; Its not looking good.

I'd only begun to think about it and can't figure out how I'd ask anyone I know, certainly not kids. Folk around my age are going to need their kidneys themselves so it'd be a right gamble for them. Thought about that "taking a kidney from someone younger" dilemma too. I'm 58 tomorrow. Say I last another 10 years before dialysis. My dad died at 69 and my mam at 75.

Who gets to live forever?

Cheers Bud. The answering is very much part of the questioning and learning I'm doing. Sounding board, learn by rote if you see what mean. Thanks to all involved. We're an .. organism (note to self: check spelling twice before posting)

We didn't ask anyone to donate a kidney to my hubby, who was on dialysis at the time. We aggressively sought out centers with short waitlists, researched angel flights, and more. Cross listing is crucial. Hubby received his kidney a year after going on dialysis on June 28 at age 71. Keep researching, be flexible in your thinking, develop a strategy. Will there's a will, there's a way - and your plan doesn't have to involve a live donor who may well need both down the road for any number of reasons.
