Diabetes along with hypertension are the two leading causes of CKD. Your nephrologist can run diagnostic tests and along with your personal medical history be able to determine the cause of your CKD.Getting any underlying health conditions under control will be the first and best step to take in slowing the progression of CKD.

As long you have diabetes most of nephrologist are stating this is leading cause. My wife is TD1 since 40 years and only last January we discovered that hypertension was real cause. In summary if you have diabetes most likely this leading problem but not ever. The only way today to be 100% sure is kidney biopsy. But you need to convince your healthcare first..

Hi TomNFL! It would be nice if there was page devoted exclusively to diabetes and kidney issues (DKD) on this site but as far as I know, I don't think one exists. I'm a caregiver to my husband, a Diabetic Type 2, who is now on dialysis. Indeed, the majority of those diagnosed with kidney disease are diabetics. Unfortunately, diabetes destroys the small blood vessels inside your kidneys and elsewhere in your body. So, that erosive force can also create heart disease, drive up blood pressure, create blindness, force amputations and more. When one reduces their weight in DKD, then the destructive action generally stops. As you probably know, diabetes is largely fueled by sugar and carbs (which convert to sugar) so those are things you'll definitely want to keep in check. (Limiting processed foods is always recommended for everyone.) The good thing is that you've likely caught your situation at a good stage where you can prevent further damage. And that's wonderful. Unfortunately, diabetes is so common that people brush aside the health conditions it produces. At my husband's dialysis center, for example, almost all are diabetics. Like those there, my husband took his pills and insulin and assumed all was well until everything took an abrupt turn and he wound up on dialysis. On the other hand, his mother, when told she was diabetic, immediately dropped her weight, eliminated her medications, and lived well into her 80s. So, two different people, two different choices. It wasn't until my husband's nephrologist told him that he only had 7 years to live, that my husband changed his diet. Unfortunately the message came a little too late. But you have sufficient time to turn your situation around. So, I'm sending encouragement your way. Yes, you can do this!

There is a ton of information out there on the connection of diabetes and CKD. I am not sure what you are asking for. But, if you can lower your A1c and control your diabetes, there is a lot of indicators that show your CKD may not decline and in some cases improve. knowdiabetesbyheart.org/5-s...
