Hi , I’m a 59 yr old female that was diagnosed with CKD earlier this year. I don’t have high BP and I don’t have diabetes and I am not overweight.I had a MRI last year for my back and it showed that my kidneys looked like I had PSKD, I then had an ultrasound and it didn’t show PSKD or anything major, a few cysts and a small kidney stone. My GFR has been steady at 48 until this week, it dropped to 41. My creatinine was 1.22 and just went up to 1.40. The change in the numbers happened within 6 weeks. My nephrologist wants me to repeat the bloodwork this week and if it is still the same he wants me to go for a cat scan. I’ve also been to a hematologist and she didn’t anything that would indicate cancer. Just confused because the doctor said my numbers don’t match the MRI or ultrasound.

CKD stage 3
HI Cheller,
Numbers from labs can flucuated and often do. It could be as simple as being more dehydrated when you did the labs. That is why your doctor wants you to retest. See what those numners indicate. There is a lot that goes into the diagnosis of CKD. And it often is not something like a cyst or stone that causes the issues. Taking ibuprofen can really mess up your kidneys. Certain blood pressure and other medication can be not good. Your diet impacts the way the kidneys are functioning. Many things you would not guess can impact your kidney function.
For now, wait and see what the labs show.
I am not familiar with PSKD. I was diagnosed with CKD based on eGFR over a period of time, and other blood work results (Sodium, Potassium, Phosphorus and protein). The specified diet has helped control the disease. There can be different causes of CKD. Good your nephrologist is having you complete the blood work. You have come to a good forum for support and information sharing. Please keep us posted on your test results and diagnosis.
ask for the 24hour sample urine test - a very important and relaible test for CKD
My nephrologist told me my ckd3 is most definitely the cause of my nexium intake throughout the years. Do you take that drug?
Is there anyone in your family that has PSKD? It is usually a hereditary disease. Your renal labs can fluctuate quite a bit depending on how much water you have been drinking the day before you had your labs done, if you had a high protein meal and exercised a lot. Diagnosing CKD takes lab tests done over many months and then doctors look at a trend, just because they can vary.
It is good that your doctor is having your labs repeated. I guess you'll have to see what the values are.
No family history of PSKD. Just worried that my bloodwork changed so much within 6 weeks. Can dehydration really cause such a drop?
Hi Cheller, I have just recently been diagnosed with CKD3, my GFR was steady at 46 but a follow up test showed GFR at 41. A further test was done two weeks later and showed an increase to 46 again. My consultant said that many things can affect your GFR including illness, dehydration etc. I too was very concerned although ultrasounds were clear. Hope the tests go OK. X
