Does anyone have suggestions for gaining weight? I cut way back on sodium and protein. Because of this I have lost 30 pounds. My doctor says it's ok, but I think I am too thin. Any suggestions?

Just sharing my experience as we all are different. I too lost weight on the CKD diet and the 35 lb loss leveled off at 20 lb loss. My Doctor had advised me it would level off.

Hi Green,

People will be so jealous that you lost that weight, even though to you it is an issue. We live in a world where being ultrathin is desirable. Once you switch over to a new diet such a a kidney diet, and you are being careful about what you eat, the result is often weight loss. In most cases, your body will adjust and rebound a bit in time. That is why diets to lose weight do not work long term. So, track your food. See a dietician who can help you plan meals and a specific caloric intake that is appropriate for you. Eat nutrient rich foods such as vegetables and legumes. If you need to add calories, try adding sauces, gravies and butter to your foods. Adding some olive oil on veggies with garlic powder and black pepper is a way to dress them up and add flavor and calories. I cannot really tell you what you should eat because I do not know if you have other issues to deal with like diabetes or high blood pressure. That is why you should see a dietician.

BTW, I lost almost 38 pounds when I switched and it has leveled off after I put some of it back on in time.

Thank you. I have never had an issue losing too much weight before, but it is a little crazy when you lose this much weight so fast. I have high blood pressure. That is how I discovered my kidney disease. Cutting back sodium is mainly how I lost most of the weight. In fact, I've always had to be careful about gaining too much weight. Either too much weight gain or too much loss is bad.

Lifting moderate weights to maintain or increase muscle mass will generally result in a little bit better appetite.
