Any suggestions for increasing weight while reducing blood sugar? Have been reducing carbs to lower blood sugar but struggle maintaining body weight. Am type 2 diabetic in stage 3 kidney disease. Am trying to up total calories to 2200 from 2000.

To maintain weight, you can build muscle. This Will also increase your metabolism and keeping it up may stress the kidneys. It is possible to build muscle with a plant-based diet.
Better check your protein and see if you are spilling it. That should have been my big clue. I was eating everything and not gaining weight. If you are diabetic this is likely the case.
That is bad news. You need to see a nepherologist ASAP. Ask for about the SGLT 2 inhibitors with an ACE or ARB; the research coming out is no short of amazing regarding stopping progression and helping T2D. You will have to drink more water and make sure your hygenine is stellar to avoid the yeast infections etc. that these drugs can cause due to more glucose coming into the urine. In my case, the blood protein was still in normal range, but my urine Total was near 600 gr/dl. What seems to have stopped mine was an a dose of Lisinopril. What happens is a hyperfiltrations with all the protein banging on the filter in the kidney, and the ACE drops the pressure in the kidney so this does not happen (as often). When you add the SGLT 2, like dapagliflozin, this drug also works on the presurre in the kidney to stop the banging, only on the opposite side of the filter, so there is a homostasis that is created that preserves the kidneys remarkably longer than the placebo did. In fact, the study was stopped because the drug was working so well that they felt sorry for those on the placebo. So long story short, if you are spilling protein, that is the number ONE predictor of progression, and needs to be dealt with now.
Aside from the drugs, stop eating meat, stop drinking, stop smoking, and stoping eating greasy food. Eat plenty of fruits and vegables. And ask to see a dietian. However, I am becoming convined that most of them don't know shit either. But there is a lot food wise you can do for yourself. Go to You Tube and watch videos regarding the SGLT 2 inhibiotrs for T2D and get informed before you see the doctor. If you cannot get in right away, go to the empergency room because this is serious and you are wasting away and blowing out your kidney.
HI Mickeybal1,With stage 3 CKD, protein is not as much as an issue as it is later stages. However, adding more protein is not always good for CKD. Try adding fat, good fats. Things like nuts are great for the diet, even CKD. They are high calorie low carb and are yummy. Peanut butter on things like apples is another way to add calories, but use real peanut butter not Jiff. All nut butters that are just crushed nuts are good. Dairy is also high fat, high calorie. So cheese is a good source. It has some protein, but more fat to the ounce and will help put on weight. Adding shredded cheese to vegetables is great. Sauces and gravies will put on the pounds as well. And my favorite, and no longer used for me.... BUTTER.... the Queen of cooking tools. Cook in butter. Add it to soups, veggies and even oatmeal. One little tablespoon has 100 calories. Hope this helps.
Salt is a no no for most due to the pressure it creates in the kidney and the relationship more pressure means that more protein molecules can get through the filter. Protein molecules are big and the pressure helps push them through the filter. This causes scarring/holes on/in the filter and that cannot be reversed. Gravy and sauces are notorius for high sodium. If you look on the back of those sauces, you will see that there is up to 1000 mg of sodium per teaspoon, crazy high. Start thinking of food as medicine and eat to live. As Americans we find a lot of community around the dinner table, we need to look for our community in taking walks together and doing other things to enjoy the day besides looking forward to our next meal. THose meals have been killing us. Soy protein, like tofu is easy to digest. There is a woman on You Tube who has a channel called Pick Up Limes...she make great food. Dr. Pamula Popper, the author of Forks Over Knives has a good channel too. Good food is your best medicine. But the standard American diet has WAY too much salt.
Butter, cream cheese and Keto ice cream, are my go to foods. Eating the Keto ice cream at bedtime, helps me put weight back on. Ive had the same problem, loosing too much weight. I’ve was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 5 years ago. Discovered the ketogenic diet, which works to keep blood sugar low, and loose weight. I’ve found a wealth of keto recipes on Pinterest, my favorite is the Keto chocolate chip cookies.
Keto ice cream, yum yum 😋 You can find it in the ice cream cooler at most of the major grocery stores. Walmart, Kroger and Safeway are where I get it. Low carb, sugar free and low protein, but, high calorie. Lots of wonderful flavors. My favorite is the KETO brand.
Almost forgot, a word of warning. The Keto friendly ice creams contain alcohol sugars. Don’t eat more than one serving, or you will be up half the night with diarrhea. Not a pleasant experience. Take it from someone who ate almost a whole pint of triple chocolate in one sitting.
Hahah.... I discovered that with a low card ice cream that I bought a few years ago. My husband and I love ice cream and were so excited to find a low carb that tasted great. Well, the result was quite a surprise......
Have you spoken with a renal dietician? You may be able to use some protein drinks to add extra calories that aren't high in carbs and are low glycemic for your diabetes. Many have whey or pea as a protein source. Good luck.
I am age 80 and similar situation and losing weight. I also have to decrease blood sugar. My Doctor told me to increase my CKD diet amounts and then bloodwork and go from there. Keep us posted on your results.
