has anyone got any tips for getting rid of that horrible 'amonia' taste in your mouth? I've got CKD

Hi,
The ammonia breath is from having excess urea. Your kidneys aren't clearing out enough of your body's urea and it's pushing it out in other ways, like when you expel air. Speak to your nephrologist.
I agree Mr K. The Doctor is best help. There are probably no over the counter solution such as mouthwash etc.
I agree. Mouthwash is a temporary fix but it won't solve the problem. The doctor will be able to determine if it's from excessive urea, a UTI, excessive alchohl or meat eating. It's for a physician to determine. I hope s/he follows thru.
Thanks for that, I’ll speak to the Renal Team about it at my next appointment.
Hello there Skyblue132! I’ve been there, and done that! Lol! From the research I’ve done online, that ammonia taste and odour you’re getting, can be caused by a high urea count in your blood. It is said also that high urea can be caused by consuming a high amount of protein in your diet.
The last time I had my blood checked (in March of this year - awhile back), my RBC, creatinine and blood urea were all above range. This was after a few months of celebrating the Christmas season! Lol! My bad! 🙄
I hope you will find this information helpful. You should also ask your family physician for a referral to a renal dietician if you’re not already connected with one. And you could try searching online for some helpful tips on such sites as DaVita.com to assist you with kidney-friendly diet planning. Many people in this forum, including myself, have been able to improve our food choices as well as trying out some good, and more kidney-kind recipes from that site.
I wish you all the best with this. Please do keep us posted on how things come along. Bye for now! 😊👍✌️
Decrease your acid load by asking your doctor about appropriate protein intake, and also ask them to see if sodium bicarb can help. I was prescribed it and it worked wonders for me.
