kidney calcification

hello everyone

I am new. I am really worried and would appreciate your views. I went for an ultrasound on Friday to check my liver and it was clear, however they noticed calcifications in my left kidney. When I asked the technician if she saw anything sinister she said no and that the calcification might lead to stones. However in her report she has advised my GP to send me for priority urology. I am really worried. Anyone has experience of calcifications or lesions in the kidney? I would be grateful for any feedback.

Thank you

Hi and welcome,

Under normal circumstances, the techs aren't supposed to tell you anything. They forward the results to a radiologist who then sends a report to the ordering physician who will then go over it with you.

Having said that the tech's report indicated a need for a urologist possibly

suspecting a urinary tract infection.

I know it's hard but try not to stress too much until you contact your physician.

Thank you for your quick response. I am grateful for such caring people.

I wait and see. Hopefully I will be more clear about what's going on.

HI Sass,

I agree....the tech should never speak directly to the patient.... and that's why. Now you do not have the complete story and you will worry. Calcifications are not always abnormal. It depends on a lot of factors. See your doctor and have them explain clearly your results.

And welcome to our little band of Warriors.

thank you for your reply. I did have a full blood test 2 weeks ago and it came back normal. I guess I was freaked out that she saw something as when I've had a scan before it was completely normal.

I am glad I found this group. Thank you again.

I would report the tech. What she did was very wrong, and you can see the reasons with what you went through. What if she misdiagnoses someone and they go off the deep end. I had a chest x-ray done and was called by a tech who told me I had to come back immediately and have them redone. This was years ago when they still did film.. I asked her why and she said there was a large black mass on one of the lungs. I absolutely freaked out. My mother died of lung cancer and my father had just passed also with lung complications and cancer. It was one of the longest afternoons in my life. Got back to the facility and somehow my husband pressed the issue with the facility and it turned out to be a finger that was captured in the image. My lungs were fine.

I am so sorry about your parents. I lost my dad to cancer too. I really empathise with what you went through following your scan. I had a heart attack three years ago and just getting my life back on track as a single parent following the passing of my wife from breast cancer. I get a lot more nervous about things than I used to.

I appreciate your message and support.

Thanks

Thank you. I am happy to have found this space.

I hope the tech's boss is not a member here, lol. I have scarring in my kidney from what who knows. If you do have kidney stones they are more easily treatable these days. The bigger issue will be to make sure your doctor gives you clear and understandable medical advice on how to prevent stones in the future, or UTI, and if there is any damage from the calcifications. Go prepared with questions you want answered, write them down, and then make sure they take the time to answer them.

Thank you for your reply. I will ask lots of questions. Unfortunately over the years I've had many problems with my bladder and kidneys as I drink very little. I am trying harder to stay hydrated. I have gone a couple of days with one glass of water in the past.
