Renvela and Constipation

Hi guys, I recently started on Renvela because of my phosphorus being elevated. Initially I didn’t have any symptoms but now I’m experiencing bouts of constipation. I wanted to see what the community’s experience has been with Renvela? And for those that had constipation, what did you do to overcome it? Any other meds people have had good experience with, so I could discuss with my doctor?

HI Shpar,

I was on something for potassium for a while. Did the same thing. It binds with the mineral and the result is not being able to go. I drink a lot of water normally so that did not help. I also eat a high fiber diet. I did not continue on it because I get diverticulitis and had a flare of that. Be careful using products to relieve constipation because they can impact your kidneys. I try to manage my levels with diet.

I have also have stage 3 CKD. My doctor suggested "Smooth Move" (SM) laxative tea. SM tea is supplied by Traditional Medicinals and comes in in two types, senna and chamomile (traditionalmedicinals.com/p.... A good website on laxatives and CKD (bcrenalagency.ca/resource-g....
