My cardiologist has me doing my blood pressure readings twice a day. The first one is in the morning when I get up. I use the bathroom, sit up straight in a chair, get comfortable once I connect to the machine and then I take my first reading. My morning reading is usually around 118/68 (average). My second one of the day is taken about 4:30 in the afternoon. I follow the same steps and my average is about 122/70. I'm on three different medications. I had been on Amlodipine up until last week and then he switched me to something else. It has lowered my morning average about four points and my afternoon numbers by two points. When I go to doctor appointments my numbers are usually in the mid 120s over low 70's. My home numbers are lower because I have time to rest before taking the readings.

If you are required to take mid-day readings then be sure to the bathroom first, sit up straight, feet flat on the floor, and wait a long five minutes before you start the reading. It might be good to turn off the TV and any music that is playing when you test. A calm environment is the most accurate way to get a true reading. About every three months, I bring my machine in the doctors and we match it to a reading there.

Your other question should be directed to your nephrologist and/or your Renal DIetitian.

Best of luck.

Hi Shane,

At stage 5, you should not take any supplements including adding cider or lemon to your water. It change the PH levels in you blood and since your filtering system is not working well, it can be unsafe. Check with the doctor. Normally, BP readings are higher in the morning for most people. The fact that yours is rising during the day is indicative of the kidney not working well again. The reading of above 90 is a concern and I would speak to the doctor. Elevated BP is also hard on the kidneys and so this is something you should alert the doctor about. I would not wait to call.

I've read that Hippocrates drank a little every day but what did he know. He was only the father of medicine.
