The November 2019 issue of AAKP's RENALIFE magazine (see pp. 12-13) recommends Renadyl by Kibow Biotech, Inc, a probiotic specifically targeting those wirh CKD. I'm CKD4 (one kidney) with an eGFR of 27-29. A 90-day supply is about $150.00.
Anyone using this product? Comments? Thanks..

I am taking Renadyl, but it’s hard to know if it really helps. My eGFR went up from 14 to 18 since I have been taking it. I am also working toward a plant-based diet (I’m at about 90% compliance), so that complicates the issue. I figure it can’t hurt and my nephrologist doesn’t see any harm in taking it.
Exactly, but there aren’t a lot of options for us. Between the Renadyl and a plant-based diet, I hope to delay dialysis or a transplant, even if only by a month!
I've been using Renadyl off and on over the last year - it and ProRenal+D (a renal multivitamin) have been part of my treatment strategy that got me up from Stage 5 to Stage 3 over the last 12 months. I recently reached out to Kibow and spoke directly to them about Renadyl.
I believe in the science behind it and wanted to find out how to make it the most effective. It needs about 2.5 to 3 months of consitant use to become the most effective. I've been documenting my journey online and decided to document just how much this can help me lower my BUN and creatinine, so I got new labs and started taking it every day. I'll be getting a second set of labs in early February and sharing my results.
You can get a discount anytime on it using the coupon code "DadviceTV" - always great to save money if you are going to take it. Just remember, you need to take it consistantly (daily) for 2.5-3 months to build up a large enough coloney for it to be effective according to their team.
I personally take an OTC probiotic. I don't take it to get rid of acid or nitrogen though. For that I follow a low to moderate protein diet and take sodium bicarb twice a day. I am not saying don't take the Renadyl, but I am saying if you can't afford it, ask your doctor if you can try more affordable options with diet counselling to reduce your acid load. It does take a while for your body to get rid of all the acid buildup. It took like 6 months for me, and I was just taking Sodium Bicarb and diet modification.
Health Buddy: Please educate me as to the reason one with CKD would routinely take sodium bicarbonate. What form do you use? By definition, wouldn't it be adding sodium to your diet? I am encouraged that the AAKP magazine featured a story about renadyl. I just wonder how much better it is than existing pro-biotics. I'll continue to research before placing my first order. Thanks.
I take Sodium Bicarb because it was prescribed by my doctor when I was first diagnosed. I take 1/2 tsp twice a day, but now that I am mostly Vegetarian diet I am going to ask if I can take once a day. You would think it would add to your Sodium intake and I asked my doctor when first prescribed. The way he explained it to me is it is a buffer and the body does not absorb it as Sodium. I have had excellent results using it, and it has not affected my BP, water retention or any other adverse effects. It is also very affordable. It never hurts to ask your doctor to see if you can try it.
There are several medical studies that have analyzed exacting what you are asking, the cost effectiveness of such supplements…current KIDGO guidelines for treatment of CKD do not recommend these supplements especially at the high cost…I’ve done extensive research and the ingredients are a crap-shoot whether you are getting any true supplement is always a question…some of the comments of increasing eGFR don’t (imho) understand the E in eGFR as it is based (by most labs) on serum creatinine and labs should “standardize” eGFR reporting., some do some don’t…with that being said, I’ve been stage 4 since 1996 and to take a probiotic but just one from a local drug store after much research and consulting with both my trusted doctor and the pharmacist…I also still take my PPI though for CKD patients they are contraindicated with a sub-20 eGFR…I just suffer too much with heartburn pain if I don’t it makes life almost unbearable FOR ME…since I was struck by AKI at 29 years old I’ve always tried to volunteer in hospital with the recently diagnosed…I’ve seen these “miracle” treatments done and go, mostly they are just like the Wild West in YS history where people bought things like bottled mercury to treat all sorts of ailments and instead treated themselves to an early death…if it was as simple as adding a probiotic wouldn’t it make sense that we ALL would be “cured” by now…just my opinion best of luck to you!
