Are you a diabetic?

I haven’t yet experienced exactly what you’re describing; however, I do sometimes need to get to the bathroom quickly when I wake up at night.

As long as I follow my sodium restrictions I still experience little fluid retention. (I’ve been in renal failure since January of 2017. I’m not yet on dialysis.)

While the kidneys were failing I noticed a decline in urination and put it on old age. When I learned that it was CKD I believed the urination would slow down. I am surprised that it has pickup. The pull ups serves two purposes bowel and bladder control issues. 37 years ago I had intestine resection surgery. There are no signs of diabetes.

HI Cle,

I am sorry you are experiencing this issue. But it does mean the kidneys, even impaired, are still doing their thing. So I look on it as a positive thing. It also means you are hydrated which is also good. I plan my day and any trips around facilities. I think I know where every bathroom exists in my area. But like I say, I am still going and often and so I am glad for it. You might want to check if any medications you are on are making it so urgent. For example, some blood pressure meds have diuretic effects. Do you have a mobility issue which makes the need for pull ups? You can help yourself by using a bathroom on a schedule. I know that I am in the morning going to need to go every hour. As the day wears on, I can go longer. I never leave the house without going first. This helps the body become used to a routine. Don't wait until the last moment when the pressure builds.

Then it may be just as others have said. I’d definitely talk with my nephrologist about this though.

You're talking about me: I'm male in my mid eighties and have urination needs similar to a pregnant woman in her third trimester, all day and all night. I will not shop at any store that does not provide rest rooms for customers. I am Autosomal Dominant PKD, stage four, GFR 21. After sitting for a while, 30 minutes to an hour, when I stand up, I must urinate. At home, I have urinals one step away from my bed that serve a two fold purpose: ready when needed and I can keep track of the volume. If the volume doesn't stay pretty close to my intake, I'm concerned. It won't match exactly because I lose some volume via my tear ducts that keep my eyes moist, saliva glands, sinuses, and intestines (to help with bowel waste). And sometimes I'm going to the bathroom at home. With forty years of experience, I can tell at a glance if I'm doing okay. Through the day I wear boxer briefs with a special attachment: it is Attends "guards for men" that is safety pinned inside the briefs to keep it in place. The provided adhesive is not reliable. The guards catch the sometimes dribble that happens beyond my control and it is not obvious that I'm wearing protection and the cost is only pennies a day. For bowel protection, folded tissue to catch occasional leakage has worked for me for years. When the need increases, I will use more protection. I have had one bad accident that happened when I got careless and didn't keep up with my intake of insoluble fiber. Caution here: If you say you're eating plenty of fiber, there are two kinds and you must know the difference. Oatmeal, cereals, psyllium, etc. are soluble. Wheat bran is insoluble and provides firmness for excrement and keeps the polyps cleaned out if you have diverticulosis. The soluble fibers are laxatives. Enough said.

PS: I make my own wheat bran capsules as the tablets are no longer available in the US. No cereal provides enough and the wheat bran kept me from having recommended resection surgery many years ago.

Unfortunately during early and later stage CKD kidneys loose one of its mains function of reabsorbing water and retuning it to the blood. Nephrons are damaged. The antidiuretic hormone no longer functions properly. The condition is nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. Not related to diabetes.

Not much can be done other than eliminating any diuretic substances such as caffeine. You will be more thirsty and must stay hydrated or you will become dehydrated. Some are effected more than others depending how much this hormone is depleted.
