3 weeks ago I was advised that resulting from blood tests I was at 25 stage 4...1 week later a further test revealed a score of 27. Yet a further week on my blood test showed a score of 39!!!! Is this possible or has a typing error been made???

Hi Mybirdbuddie,

Maybe, but the results might be just from you being more dehydrated at the time. GFR will fluctuate accordingly. so great that it went up. Also, did you have something else going on like an infection or stone? That will also make a difference, of course. think about the time of day you had the lab drawn and how much water did you drink before. I try to do my labs in the late morning after lots of water.

Well said Bassetmommer.

Also the amount of protein you eat can effect your creatinine which then effects your gfr. So if you've eaten high protein foods and dehydrated then they all have a big impact.

Have they told you any information about your potassium, sodium or urea levels, as generally if you have an issue with your kidneys then these will be effected.

Hopefully things will continue to improve for you, and if not we are here to support and guide you.

Charlene

There's another resource: a Kidney Support Group if one exists in your community. Members cannot give medical advice, but they are allowed to share their experiences. Someone in the group may have experienced the very same thing.I belong to a local ostomy support group (my bladder came out in 2015 due to cancer), and I'm glad I did! mybirdbuddie, my wife and I used to own a pet shop. What kind of bird do you own? We own a Quaker Parakeet who talks.

Hi MyDixidude,

Thank you so much for your advice. I own a budgie who is very laid back, a male, 10 years old, tries to talk but not very good. My biggest problem regarding fluid intake is that I do not drink anything hot..find cold water from the fridge not too bad but do have a swallowing problem and have to sip what ever I drink. I think I am a problem 82 year old!!!

Good luck with your appointment on the 16th, i hope you get the answers you need. Don't be scared to ask questions. My advise would be write them down from today as you think of them and then you won't forget them and don't worry how long it is, you ask your questions, and even take notes or take someone with you as not everything will go in even when it is good news.

We can only support and advise from our own experience but everyone's renal condition is very individual so before impleme ting any major changes to consult with a professional

Please let us all know how you get on as people on hear really do care about each other

Thank you for the info Bassetmommer. in fact nothing had changed and admit I do suffer from dehydration continually and accept my fluid intake is unacceptable!!! I was my normal self. My Dr did a double flip when the 39 occurred and felt something was wrong. However I do have an appointment with a nephrologist on 16th may so hopefully will know more then.

Hi Mybirdbuddie,

I hope that you will start drinking more water. Things like coffee and tea will dehydrate you. Sometimes we eat foods with more fluid in them. Things like jello and popsicles add water. But you can really improve your situation and stay away from dialysis longer by drinking water. It helps the kidneys that are struggling to pass the toxins that build up in our bodies. Such a simple thing to do to prolong your kidney function.

If water tastes bad to you try these couple of ideas. Add something like koolaid or crystal lite to the water. Water enhancers are better than pop, although I am not keen on them because of the chemicals. Get the ones that are little squirt bottles as they do not have sugar in them.

Better is to add fruit to the water. I make a beverage with cucumber, strawberries and lemon and limes. Let it sit in a big jug in the refrigerator. This is very refreshing on a hot day and packed with vitamins.

I drink cold water all the time. I have a big 32 ounce water jug and I refill it at least twice a day. Sometimes in the winter, I will heat water up and put a thick slice of lemon and a packet of stevia in it. I do drink one cup of caffeine free chi tea in the afternoon as a treat. I also like peppermint teas. Be careful with teas and some of the different ones like chamomile tea can thin you blood if you drink too much.

Let us know how you labs turn out.

Hello Bassetmommer....i agree that fluids are the key to extending kidney function..i drink about 100 to 120 oz of water a day...my favorite is a coconut water sold at walmart...i know coconut is high in potassium...but my potassium stays on the low side..so maybe it is more flavoring than actual coconut..just wanted your opinion on it...thank you

Hi,

I am not a nutritionist but my reading on coconut water said this. "Just limit your intake to a few servings a day" It is loaded with potassium. Keep in mind that right now your potassium load might be ok, but there may come a time when you overload and run into trouble. I say all things in moderation. Please check this article out where I got the quote.

I like your idea of adding fruit to water. The better taste the more one will drink.
