Your kidney-friendly meal plan depends on your lab values. Ask your doctor(s) for a referral to a renal dietitian. Bring your last years worth of blood and urine labs results with you and the RD will work with you to develop your specific meal plan. To give you an idea of what you will be dealing with, go to the davita.com website and look at their Recipes. They have plenty of options available for you and depending on your specific tastes and health requirements you can find plenty there to help you slow the progression of CKD.

Keep in mind that none of their recipes are meant to be taken at face value. They can and should be adjusted for your individual tastes and needs.

For example, you must cut down on sodium, so limit your salt intake even from what the recipe calls for. The amount of protein and where it comes from should be adjusted after consultation with the RD again, to match your needs and preferences.

Finally, remember that the meal plan doesn't become static. You can substitute other fruits and vegetables as they come in season. Also, you can always tweek the items after a significant lab results by contacting your RD and asking for advice. Eventually, you may be able to be able to make the changes yourself.

In addition to what Mr. Kidney says, one thing that I often do when I am searching for whether an ingredient is good for me (with ckd) or, how to prepare something in a more kidney healthy way is to put the ingredient name or the meal name followed by ckd into a google search. This will usually take me to many kidney healthy ways to prepare the ingredient or meal, or, why this is not a good choice.

Hope this helps!

As others have written, can't beat work with a renal dietitian and in the meantime, go to Davita website.

Good luck!
