No Red Meat: Does this include pork? Turkey? - Kidney Disease
No Red Meat
My renal dietitian advised me that turkey is acceptable as well as an occasional meal of "white" pork as opposed to the darker meat would be okay, but not if it was smoked.
HI Kungfudude,
There are a lot more factors to include in decisions about what to eat including meat. Are you trying to cut down on protein? Then ALL animal protein is harder on the kidney than plant based. Are you trying to cut down on potassium? Then pork is not a good choice. Are purines an issue for you (causes gout and higher uric acid) Then turkey is not good. Is cholesterol an issue? Then of course fatty meats such as prime rib are not good choices.
This may seem overwhelming and that there always seems to be some issue with foods for CKD. That is why it is good to see a renal dietician who can map out something specific for you.
The bottom line is moderation of anything. Depending on what stage you are and what other medical conditions you are dealing with such as diabetes or high cholesterol will impact what you can enjoy. If you do not have the opportunity to see a renal dietician, look your food choices up to see what the nutritional values are and then make wise choices. There are many sites out there but here is a good one: ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/

I eat turkey but never red meat !
Hi, kungfudude,
According to all my research, all animal protein is pretty much the same workload - even acid load - for kidneys, especially damaged kidneys. I stopped eating animal flesh, including fish.
I would strongly urge you to do your own online research instead of depending on the answers from others (even myself). Good luck.
