Hi. I’ve been on PD for a month and a half and it’s going well with the exception of weight gain. I am not eating anything crazy but the number keeps going up and I don’t know what to do the help get it under control. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi Nikki41775,

What is your ultrafiltration?? It could be that your body is holding on to more fluid than PD can get off in a day. It could also mean that you need to go up in concentration temporarily. Also, making sure that you cut out any unnecessary sodium will help get this extra fluid off. When I was on PD, I gained around 7lbs of water weight that just didn't come off- I exercised, kept to my fluid restrictions and everything. Definitely talk to your nephrologist and PD team about your concerns and see what they recommend! Keeping vocal about even little things will keep you on track and keep yourself healthy while on PD. Good luck!

Well last night I got almost 600 UF’s and for me that’s good. I normally am between 200-600 a night. I do a manual fill before I go to work and almost never drain it all when I get home. I guess I’m absorbing it? I definitely stay away from sodium. I’ll be seeing my nurse next week and my doctor on Wednesday so I will be talking to them both

It's very easy to absorb, since dextrose solution is basically expensive sugar water like 3kidneys said. Maybe you need to drain earlier during the day? I hope you can find something that works for you!

Keep in mind everything Ladybug_05 said, but you also need to realize that PD fluid is basically sugar water, so it does contain calories. You’re nurse can give you the specifics and your dietician can help you get control of your weight. Of course the higher the concentration the more calories.

I use a 1.5 and a 2.5 bag each night. It’s what I’ve always used and am nervous to try anything different. I definitely have to talk to my doctor and nurse to see what they advise
