Vegan Diet: What's the best source for a diet... - Kidney Disease
Vegan Diet
HI,
I too try to follow a vegan diet and I also have diabetes. It gets difficult because what is good on a renal diet such as pasta and white bread is not good for the diabetes. I use myfitnesspal.com to track my foods and to investigate the contents. Although, the accuracy of the information is often open to the interpretation of the person who submits it. I plan my daily diet on there. davita.com/ is good because it has a lot of the nutritional value including in the food listings. I however, feel their recipes are not as kidney friendly nor as healthy as they seem. When in doubt, I use ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/ to check my foods out. If you have not seen a renal dietician, I recommend you do. They will be able to help you in a more personal way.
Thanks for the reply. I find a number of diets given to be unhealthy, tons of meats, isolated protein, etc. Recently they said the whole grains are now OK, as the substances they were worried about is only absorbed 50% due to the phylates in whole grains. I try to follow a whole food plant based diet, and avoid vegan "junk food". I will see a dietitian soon at the Dialysis Center, although I'm choosing PD (should have fewer diet and fluid restrictions) than hemo. Briefly talked to a dietitian months ago at a seminar from LaVita, although he didn't sound like he was very informed about vegan diets. Stay in touch...Mike
