I have to have a colonoscopy and they want me to use "Suprep Bowel Prep Kit" which they claim is safe for people with stage 3 renal disease but... everything I have read says not to use it. Has anyone with stage 3 renal used anything else?
Thank you in advance

Thank you for your quick response..I have used "Movie Prep" in the past but my doctors practice no longer uses it. I guess they weren't getting a big enough kick back from the manufacter!!!!!
They prescribed Miralax and Crystal Lite with 2 Dulcolax for both parents. Dad in 2004 and mom in 2011.
My last colonoscopy...I was prescribed Magnesium Citrate and did fine.
Discuss it with your doctor if you have any reservations..
It will go well!
Let me know the outcome.
I care!
Bet
I had mine done last September. I was also Stage 3 CKD. I had to down 2 bottles of Magnesium Citrate and the night before the procedure I had to take four pills at the same time. I believe the pills were Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) at 5 mg. each. That was my one and only experience with the procedure and I wish I could provide more help. I've not heard of the Suprep kit. Hope everything comes out alright.
Just had mine done a month ago and was told to use Dulcolax, Magnesium Citrate and Miralax. Because of a slow moving bowel, on my own, I also added three days with low fiber. Worked very well.
Always ask your doctor for clarification as to taking any medicine. It is how you advocate for the best care. Most doctors would rather you ask about something before and not accuse after. You should also be able to ask a pharmacist too. When I had mine, I had four Dulcolax and then Miralax in Gatorade over an eight hour time frame. It was not as explosive.... (sorry)
I appreciate all your responses...I have a call into my doctor but haven't heard back. I really get upset with the doctors because they take their sweet time getting back to you (Iknow I am not their only patient) but one of the key things they tell you is to avoid stress...don't they see they are sometimes the cause of it!
I will request the Dulcolax, Magnesium Citrate and/or Miralax.
Thanks again, its great to be able to bounce things off this group!
Talk with your nephrologist or call the nurse. I was told that Magnesium Citrate is a BIG NO NO for ckd and transplant patients. i had my colonoscopy a year ago and was given something that did the trick but was easy on the kidneys. Magnesium citrate with the magnesium and the salt is very hard on the kidneys.
My nephrologist said only Go-lyghtly, it is the mildest prep there is for people who are chronically or very ill, just had mine done yesterday, thank God I am good for another 10 years I hope. I am stage 5.
For those of us who have CKD, we each have different lab results that got us to where we are. Also, as we move along the road our symptoms may change due to lab results changing. All your surgeon can do at the time of your clean-out is to recommend the best method for that clean-out based on your current situation. There is no "one prep for all" regimen. Part of the reason why the surgeon spoke to my Nephrologist was to find out where I was at with my labs and which was the best prep for the clean-out.
If you don't have a chronic illness or heart issues then the surgeon will make the best choice for you to clean out prior to the Colonoscopy.
Thanks for all your support and suggestions. I still haven't heard from my nephrologists' office yet so if I don't hear something by tomorrow I will try the doctor directly! There are so many "preps" out there but I have other medical problems besides stage 3 renal that I want to be sure all my doctors (who are all in different practices) are reading off the same sheet of music!
Miralax burned my bladder (for 3 months) (see Yahoo group MIRALAX). So go lightly is ok then? Not mag. citrate...got it. Hard to know. We shouldn't have to ask each other. Where are the doctors?
