Claritin kidney disease

In general, anti-histamines do not cause kidney problems. Some, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) can cause retention of urine in your bladder. Others such as Claritin and Zyrtec are generally very safe.Sep 27, 2013

Loratadine (Includes Claritin) ↔ Renal/Liver Disease

Moderate Potential Hazard, High plausibility

Applies to: Renal Dysfunction, Liver Disease

Loratadine is primarily converted by the liver to an active metabolite, and both parent drug and metabolite are excreted in the urine. Patients with renal and/or liver disease may be at greater risk for adverse effects from loratadine due to drug and metabolite accumulation. The manufacturer recommends one-half the regular dosage initially in patients with liver failure or decreased renal function (GFR < 30 mL/min). Due to the differential effects of hepatic impairment on the serum half-life and clearance of loratadine and pseudoephedrine, the use of products containing a fixed combination of these drugs is not recommended in the presence of liver failure.

Itching is a good indication that your phosphate levels are high. Itching, paired with the metallic taste in your mouth are also symptoms of kidney damage or failure and can be addressed by your nephrologist:) I personally make sure to exfoliate when I shower to eliminate any dead skin that might be on my arms or legs and I take Cetrizine hydrochloride (generic allergy med) since claritin stopped working for me. It was approved by my dialysis team so it's safe :) I hope this helps!

My kidney doctor perscribed piriton liquid which is save for the kidneys and works like a dream. Although itching happens more when your kidney disease progresses. I think your iron/ferritin levels might be low as that causes metallc taste in the mouth and itching so best speak to your consultant and see when they where last checked

All over itching can be an indication of high phosphorus which adversely impacts bone health. Have you had recent blood work which would show your phosphorus levels? What stage is your kidney disease? Are you on dialysis? The metallic taste in your mouth is often indication of overloaded metals in your system like potassium, sodium, magnesium etc., or that they are not being filtered out properly by the kidneys. Again, simple blood work can show the results of the levels of these and if they are too high etc. Tell us more if you feel you can. Blessings

Ok, Just a note, I have CKD stage 3 because of Kidney removal. I had that horrible itching as well. I did take certrizine but had to stop it because the lack of the kidney (CKD) cause AFib. So, just beware. There are creams out there that worked for me. Also, I am 77 and doing great. I feel wonderful so we can do this. I also lost over 40 lbs. That to me is the key. If overweight lose it. XXOO Buddygramma
