bouncing GFR's?

Past 12 mos. I've been under a nephrologist's care for 1st time. I've gone from Stage 3 to Stage 4 with quickly sinking GFRs. Now, my latest GFR is back to Stage 3 levels of 12 mos. ago. Should I doubt the latest reading or believe it bounces around from Stage-to-Stage?

My experience is that with diet prescribed, my eGFR does bounce around some. Did you have test done at a different lab?

GFR does fluctuate somewhat. Mine was at 26 and I was expecting the next labs to be at 25 - ready to be referred to a transplant unit - and then the next month I was up to 30.

It will bounce around a bit as the EGFR cannot be measured directly and is actually derived using a math calculation. So the EGFR is based on other products in the blood that can be detected and measured. The concentration of these products can be affected by what you have eaten, how much exercise you have done just prior to the blood test and also how hydrated you are.

Agree with rabbit. Illness can also affect it. Mine will drop by ten points if something is affecting my immune system such as a cold or a case of shingles. I've been bouncing around by thirty points up and down over the last year.

The only way to get a true ready is to have a isotope get scan. This is where they weight you, take your height, take blood, pump you full of radiation then take blood at 1 1/2hours then an 1 hour after that and repeated 2 more times. This is so they can plot your correct gfr instead of it being egfr. Mine in my bloods shows egfr 25 but on that test it's got is 8 due to my small size. Dad had is done and egfr is 53 and on the other test it's got is 72.

The test is expensive and they may only do it is the suspect they can't trust the egfr.

Hope you have a lovely Christmas and try not to worry about your numbers, concentrate on how you feel in yourself.
