Recently I posted that I'd found out by accident that I was at stage 3b CKD with a GFR of 43.
In a bumbling sort of way after some research and also some excellent advice and support from people on here I fairly drastically changed my diet, reducing salt, protein etc and going mainly plant based.
I've not yet managed to read Lee Hulls book, (perhaps not the best for bedtime reading, although a great aid for sleep!).
I've just had my latest blood results, my GFR is now 48 and my creatinine is down from 119 to 109.
I'm amazed because I'd had proteinuria on and off for a few weeks prior to the test and was convinced my results would be much much worse.
I just wanted to share this as I know you'll all understand how pleased and excited I feel.

Diet is certainly the key. Stay on top of it. If you have protein in the urine, get on an ACE or ARB. You might be experience spikes in your bp that you are not aware of, and the studies are finding that the lower the bp the better off you are. Between 110 and 120 is supposed to be the target, even for older people. The kidneys like low bp at a constant rate. They don't like the spikes.
Mine do the spikes too much family stress can’t seem to get away from it. I think I’m even tense in my sleep wake up aching head to toe and wouldn’t get out of bed my my little four legged friend must be fed . She even whines if I dose off during the day lol
Thank you for that. My blood pressure has always been low, between 90/60-110/70, but perhaps I am having spikes at other times, definitely worth checking and I have had lots of stress recently.
Yeah, stress is certainly a killer. Meditation, even for 10 minutes in the mornings is supposed to be literally brain changing. Get on YouTube and see some videos and try it out.
Try the insight timer app for meditation. It's free and has 1000s of guided meditations plus a timer for timed ones. It's excellent and free although you can upgrade for a few $$ a month
I'm thrilled for you!!! You must be so relieved!! Keep up the great work with the plant based diet. A positive attitude, a good sense of humor, and strong willpower to avoid too many tempting treats will really pay off with your lab results in the future as well. And don't forget to drink plenty of water.
What a great holiday gift you received from the lab!!!
All my best for a happy holiday and healthy new year!!
Thank you so much for that Sophiebun, I am so pleased, and it goes to show how much a change of diet can help. I intend to carry on, despite joking with my family that I'm going to celebrate with steak, chips, tomato's......in my dreams!
A very Merry Christmas to you too and thank you for all your help and advise.
(I would put smileys on but haven't worked out how to yet!!!)
No just my sorry attempt of humor like at school we had A to F for excellent to failing my diet I’m not nearly making it . I try then get depressed and think already messed up yesterday so another day won’t hurt . I can’t seem to stay away from soda and candy. I tried raw veggies and fruits and my body rejected that idea 🙁 I guess I’ll have to figure it out with my diverticulitis I should of known better. But I’m so happy for you .🎄
Ha ha, that is funny, sorry for being too stupid to get it, I should be standing in a corner with a dunces cap on!Why aren't you cooking your veg? I find cooked and mixed in with carbs is easier.
Maybe try making small manageable changes to start, rather than try to do too much at once.
I have days of messing up, but just start again the next day.
Yay! Wonderful news. Hope this gives you encouragement to deal with your disease and keep up the changes that are working for you. Celebrate a great holiday and into 2022. Merry Christmas! Thanks for sharing
Great news! I tell everyone I know how changing my diet to plant based made a HUGE difference..even though i am now stage 4, I have been stable for 2 years! It has definitely slowed the progression. I found I enjoy exploring New recipes too.
Yes actually you're right, I tend to stick to the same stuff which I feel is safe, but I'd like to vary my diet a bit more now I feel a little more confident. I'm surprised how little I miss the stuff I've cut out.
well done for what you've achieved with your diet, that's brilliant.
Hi, pheebee, my mums also having bubbly urine which was alot at the beginning and now its has reduced to the area of ur thumb touching ur fore finger, I want to know what are ur diet plans each day so I can try and follow it
Hi Tony, I really am no expert, this is early days for me and I have a lot to learn, I really need to read Lee Hull's Kidney book, but am finding it hard going. There are many others on here who are far more experienced, organised and knowledgeable with their diets, also of course as others will say, everyone is different, so different factors need to be taken into account.
I advise you to speak to a professional, but I know from experience it's not easy to find or see one.
I have no idea why I have CKD, and have had no professional help or advice.
I was referred to a dietician early this year, but have heard nothing so far.
My G.P said it is probably inherited, I think also not helped by thirty three years of completely random shifts, day and night as a nurse, and smoking (which I've managed to reduce but not stop).
I am not overweight, hypertensive or diabetic for a start, so I think things are easier for me.
I am hypothyroid and my folic acid is low for which I'm on a supplement.
I drink fruit smoothies every morning.
I tend to eat white rice, noodles or quinoa, and mix in about ten different kidney friendly vegetables, some boiled, some fried with garlic paste, and some braised. Occasionally I have a few tuna flakes mixed in with it. But keep protein and salt low. I have a vegan mayonnaise made from chickpeas.
Sometimes I make onion based vegetable soups.
I also have half a globe artichoke or half a corn cob once or twice a week.
I eat flatbreads with hummus or vegan cheese and lettuce or quinoa crackers with nut butters and redcurrant jelly.
If I have potato I soak it for four hours first.
I've cut out most dairy and have almond milk, but I do still eat butter (probably too much, as my cholesterol is higher than it should be).
I eat lemon sponge cake.
I avoid processed food as much as possible and don't have any fizzy drinks.
I drink normal tea, but it's very very weak with almost no milk, so more like hot water really.
Thank you for asking me that, it's been useful for me to stop and think about what I eat.
Thanks so much for replying to me, my mum is hypertensive and I fear that she has ckd stage 3 so I'm currently trying to learn as much as possible to prevent that. We both have started a vegan diet and I had the opportunity of having a famous nephrologist recommend me this just now afternoonrounds.com/2020/04... hope it'll be helpful to u and anyone else
