For a few years now I've not been able to eat things such as all bran weetabix brown bread ect. I can eat white bread rolls ect and I have no idea why if I eat said things I end up getting horrible stomach ache bloating wind and diohreah. I also have the same trouble with prebiotic drinks my mum says I should go to the doctor but I'd rather visit the dentist . Dose anybody else have this problem or is it just me ???

A lot of people have problems with wheat. A little white bread isn't bad for you if you can tolerate it. Having had stomach problems for a few years now, if I react to something I tend not to have it again. Seeing the doctor wouldn't hurt you, but finding alternatives to foods you react to is a good route to take too. Good luck :)

If you think it's a food intolerance or allergy, the Allergy UK website might be worth a look: allergyuk.org

The outer skin of wheat (bran) can cause digestive problems for many people. The grains used for white bread/pasta etc have had the outer skin removed. If your symtoms are mild it is possible to build up your intake of wholemeal products gradually so as to accustom your digestive system and allow it to cope, but if your symtoms are severe it is best avoided.

Please see your doctor. You may be gluten sensitive. Also, check out the Gluten Free Gorrilas group on HU.

Coeliac UK is also a good place for information about issues with gluten and wheat.

Hi Missmiff

If you are ok with white but not brown bread, it sounds as though you are having problems with fibre rather than gluten. As MW50 has said, if you want to increase your fibre intake you need to do it gradually. Although bread is a common food, it can be difficult for some people to digest. You could try bread made with alternative flours, like rye, but this is also high in fibre.

Rather than prebiotic drinks, try slowly increasing your intake of pre- and pro-biotic foods. Vegetables like onions, leeks and bananas have a good fibre content. Perhaps try a little natural yoghurt with live cultures (you could add some berries to it).
