Hi all, according to MFP my daily calorie target should be 1280, but according to the BMI calculator on the NHS site it should be 1700 - 2100, anyone else as confused as I am?!

Hi i'm 16st and mfp has given me 1450 cal bmi gave me between 1550 and 2000 I'm just wondering if you weigh a lot less or accidentally put the wrong weight in bmi or mfp. I hope i don't come across as cheeky it's just that it's easy done and it does seem like a really big difference in calories 👍

It could be the difference between losing weight and maintaining weight.

Hello its the same for me MFP says 1280 and BMI calculator says 1495 -1922.

Im trying to stick to 1400 and see how that works for me.

My advice, is to eat as many calories as you can, while still losing weight.

As you lose weight, your calorie allowance decreases accordingly. If you start off by eating too few, you will find it extremely hard to lose weight as you get closer to your goal.

Are the goal weights and time to lose the same on both sites?

I was going to suggest what Prin did and also how much you have said you want to lose per week on MFP - it could be that you are looking to lose twice as much on MFP and therefore its reflecting that in your cals?

Ah having checked with MFP again the calorie target I quoted of 1,280 was the figure AFTER exercise. I assume the BMI figure on the NHS site is before exercise and assumes a certain calorie loss based on the Activity level you've selected?

The NutraCheck app shows the total calories consumed and exercise calories burnt as different lines, so I need to check that again to understand how that compares with the MFP figure, will report back!

Hi, yes I found it confusing at first. I've just returned to it after break I've but this time I've stopped entering exercise in as it then calculates the calories used and adds to daily total giving me more to eat, I prefer to stick to thought of 1400 consumed minus calories burnt off. It is a good tool though for working out meals and keeping records.

Hi

Both ask you about you activity level - mfp also asks you about you weekly loss goal.

On the nhs page, I get an allowance that will already include calories taken off for a HEALTHY weight loss. I use the low activity level and this gives me a good calorie allowance with which I still l lose weight.

On mfp I have set my activity to low and my loss goal to 1lb and to be honest, I come to the same calories on both. As I do more exercise it all varies anyway, but if I I do my settings wrong, I end up with 1280 calories, which would make me extremely ill.

I have spent an evening using various bmr and calorie calculators, and have played around with different settings.

The most important lesson I have learnt is that severe under eating leads to hunger attacks, headaches loss of energy and in the long run failure.

1280 sounds low, especially on a non/low exercise day, meeting that would be difficult. Having said that, when I was most successful at losing weight before, MFP worked for me well.
