Is it safe to dye hair in the 2nd trimester?

I read conflicting opinions online about dying hair in pregnancy. I usually use Herbatint which is ammonia free. What is your experience?

My hairdresser said it's fine to have my hair dyed and I've had my hair dyed in both my pregnancies.

I’ve never dyed my hair but thought the brands website might give you a definitive answer. This is what their website says:

HERBATINT™ would not recommend the use of permanent hair colours while pregnant. Ultimately it is your decision so as and when you do decide to colour your hair so always skin test then strand test before use. NO AMMONIA means far less of the product finds its way into the blood system.

I think with most things it will come down to personal preference x

I’ve been researching this myself. Yes It is ok but just make sure you do a patch test first even if it’s one you normally use, as we are extra sensitive during pregnancy! x

I asked my midwife about this. Yes, it’s okay to go to a salon and to have it done professionally. No to box dyes and doing it yourself.

Hay,

I had mine dyed throughout all three pregnancies. The last one I used box dyes due to lockdown and everything was fine although I did do a patch test and only did the roots x

Thank you for all your answers. I guess the safest option would be to go to the hairdresser and use Henna dye which is chemicals-free.

Just do your research on henna. I have read that if you use henna or had a henna tattoo this can cause an allergic reaction if you then use normal hair dye. I could be talking out my butt but just putting it out there.

I’ve also seen on the NHS website that it does say to wait after 12 weeks. Don’t leave on for longer than you have to and work in a ventilated room. Not much of the dye gets absorbed through the roots so considered ok
