This might be unrelated but has anyone had problems with their tongue and mouth? it feels like my tongue has been burnt and I have lost taste. Everything tastes alkaline, like baking soda. My mouth hurts and my throat has been sore. It's not Covid. My mouth has also been extremely dry.
Thank you.

Sometimes meds can give you a bad taste, but it probably wouldn't cause you pain. You should probably ask your doctor about it. It might not be serious, but better to get it checked out. Besides, it sounds really unpleasant. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!😊
Thanks so much. I only take vitamins D3 and B12. The pain went away after 4 days but the dryness and lack of taste has not gone away. If it continues, I'll have it checked out. Yes, it is so unpleasant. Even water tastes bad.
"You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone..."
Love the quote, unfortunately! I hate all the new stuff that happens both with MS, and with age! This wasn't here yesterday - let's go back to yesterday! Or better yet, for me, 2019. I was feeling pretty good then! ☹️
Hello Flowerdragon, Sorry to hear about your discomfort. You might want to “check-in” with your doctor and also review side effects of possibly some of medications. There are some with side effects of “dry mouth.” Get note of when you noticed it so you and doctor can get a clear picture. Sending prayers your way, hope it gets better soon 🙏
No other symptoms. It might have nothing to do with MS . At first, I actually thought that toothpaste was the culprit but this has gone on too long. I just don't know.
Helloooo. Did you think of having Zinc supplement? It is related to the loss of taste. The Vit B group helps with the mouth irritation. Hope this helps
since you mentioned it, when I lost my smell and taste ( I mentioned it in a post below) I joined a lost of taste site and it also made me wonder if zinc was a problem. So I try to avoid it although some suppliments have it in them and maybe that is why I again question how much I am tasting.
Hello, Why do you try to avoid zinc? It is extremely important in neurotransmitters's (dopamine, serotonine ...) synthesis as well as in smell and taste.
I had lost of taste ( except tongue taste of sour, sweet, etc.) and smell for a number of years. Based on something I read online, I started taking Vit B I think B12 supplement. and my taste slowly came back. That was maybe about 10 years ago. I continued to be able to smell and taste but not quite as strongly as I used to, but then I am also 76 now. I continue to have some taste except last several days I have had moments where I don’t think I actually tasted what I was eating or drinking. I tend to sweeten a lot with stevia so that may mask the taste. I had an ent exam recently and that was normal. So I guess I attribute this to MS mostly but it is one of those things that is impossible to diagnose.
Wow, that's very interesting. I've been a vegetarian for 45 years and have been pretty healthy. I recently switched to a 80& vegan diet. I take B12 but maybe not enough. I guess I should get bloodwork done.
Around the same time I was diagnosed with MS (last Feb) I started having a very dry mouth and throught, very sensitive to spices, I could not even have black pepper, let alone more spicy foods! We thought it was dry mouth brought on by a medicine I was on, but it has persisted, and through the almost year of trying to figure this out, plus working on dealing with having MS... I found am also low on sodium, this has been an ongoing problem, but I actually had my new PCP tell me to add more salt to my foods and drink at least one electrolyte drink a day... which got me researching... and wondering if the dry mouth wasn't actually dehydration, but without enough salt and electrolytes, just water wasn't fixing it. So, I bit the bullet and bought Buoy Hydration, an electrolyte and salts 'mineral boost' that is not flavored, that you add to your water (or any drink, I even add it to my coffee). I can't stand the taste of most electrolyte drinks, btw. And the dry, burnt feeling in my throat and mouth feels like it is slowly going away. I'm only on day 5 of trying it. It has a 30 day money back guarantee, and a chronic illness club (where you can get a %'s off your order using a link they send you, and it is free to join). It does have a very slight mineral taste, which to me kinda tastes like you mixed regular water with distilled water, still okay and I can't taste it at all in my coffee or tea. If it fixes this awful feeling feeling in my mouth/throat, it is worth it!
May not have anything to do with what is going on with you, but that is what I have found that seems to be starting to help with what I've got going on that is slightly similar! Thought I would share, in case it helps or sparks an idea! Best of luck to you!🧡
Thank you for sharing. This is so interesting! I know that will help. My mouth gets so dry at night that my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. I have been spritzing with biotene and drinking lots of water but it's still bad. I'm afraid to eat a lot of salt because I have high BP. I'm going to stock up on electrolyte drinks and look into Buoy Hydration.
I'll bet that will help. My throat gets sore, too.
I'm the same with the dry throat at night and the Biotene! I even switched to Biotene toothpaste and mouthwash, because the dry mouth was so bad... but if the electrolytes are helping with taking Buoy, then something else was off, and I guess I was/am dehydrated, but in a way that just water wouldn't help!
Hello Flowerdragon, I am sorry you are having to go thru this. Sometimes my tongue burns but it don't last very long. I always lose my taste when I have a cold and when I got covid usually last about a week. Years ago I took some cold med. with zinc it took a month to get my taste back.
My taste changes off and on, I learn thats an ms symptom
Hi, Flowerdragon. Sorry for the late reply. Like everything else on my right side, my tongue is wonky on the right side too. Burning. Always burning. When I drink something cold, I wallow it around on the right a bit, just enjoying the cool sensation before swallowing. Just something I live with.I hope you are having a good day!
Hi, Mollyabigail. Thank you for writing. It's a horrible feeling but I feel better knowing that I am not alone. It's scary when water tastes weird. I'm sorry that you have been dealing with it. Yes, I guess it's best to learn to live with it.Be well, and I'm having a good day! Same to you.
