My tongue burns so bad that I need to chew gum all the time. I drink plenty ,use Biotine gel. My mouth gets dry after eating and I need my gum. I feel I need to explain why I always have gum in my mouth. Many of my meds have dry mouth as a side affect, but I feel I might have neuropathy of my tongue?

Hi Nani5 , I get the numb or tingling tongue sensation, and also have dry mouth, but not the burning as you describe. Gabapentin may not totally alleviate my sensory symptoms, but it does calm them.

Is this a new symptom? Does your doctor know?

I hope someone else here can add something. In the meantime, mark your calendar with when this sensation started and share it with your doctor. I hope you get some answers and relief. πŸ’•

Nani5 I have Burning Tongue Syndrome. There is such a beast. Whether it is caused by MS or bad reaction to strong antibiotic causing severe case of mouth thrush doctors don't know, but it is frustrating and keeps me from enjoying a lot of my favorite foods (like chili in the winter), I use baby teething medicine to help when it is burning bad or when I forget and eat something spicy. Too many symptoms and too few remedies with MS!!!!

Wow, Agapepilgrim, you learn about a new symptom every day! Whoever would have dreamt that so many body parts could rebel like that? Sukie427

G'day agapepilgrim, a doctor should be able to easily find out if your burning tongue is caused by thrush or not. A simple mouth swab and culture would find that I'm sure. Remember, your doctor is working for you. They are a service provider and you the consumer. If you're not getting a satisfactory service go elsewhere. As I often say, if you were not happy with the job a mechanic was doing on your car you would take it to another. You and your health are much more important than your car. Have a good one.

@shortyPPMS 0h he knew o had bad case of thrush at onset 12 yes ago. Lips were so swollen they touched my nose and mouth full of sores and couldn't talk. Rather painful. After he treated the thrush, the nerve endings were damaged and any time I eat the least bit spicy food (think mild salsa) my tongue is on fire. That dr was convinced the severe case of thrush damaged the nerve endings. Fast fwd 5 yrs and a move to another state new doctor and hewanted proof of my story. Hence, the neurologist.

Nani5 it's MSFighter. I he suffered from extreme dry mouth quite frequently. It's also due to my medicine. A different doctor I went to see recently said that while team was pretty worthless as it wore off qyuickly, like 10-15 minutes. He gave me samplr of this different dry mouth spray called Aquoral. Of course it's extremely expensive. Run through insurance like a class 3 and it'll cost you like $75 butt he gave me off and if I paid cash I've got a full size prescription of the spray for $25. it's supposed to last by keeping your mouth hydrated for 5-6 hours. If it last the first time I used it 3 or so hours which was significantly better. But I used it a few days ago and it seem like it didn't last any time at all. Nani you might see if your doctor has a free sample and try it. It is worth a shot for free. Other than that I'm as clueless as you are with this awful dry mouth. If you promise anything to help in your quest please let me know. And I'll do the same for you. It's very nice talking to you again hope you're doing well. Remember to take care of yourself!

Nani5 there is a condition called burning mouth syndrome. There are treatments for this. Have you seen your health care provider about it?

Burning mouth syndrome is often treated wit trials of clonazepam, tricyclics, AEDs like Lyrica or gabapentin with fair results. Google BMS burning mouth syndrome and read medscape site. I have had 2 patients with this

Hi Nani5 While l have never heard of this. I do know my taste buds are changing. I actually started crying the other night, because my bf made his meatloaf, and I love it! But l couldn't eat it, it was to spicy, and he said it was the same as always :'( l was devistated needless to say.

I also deal with dry mouth, using biotin right now. Says it takes 28 days to work Grrrrr 26 more to go hahaha

I hope you find relief soon. What about milk or yogurt? Just thinking out loud. Let us know....

A few years back I had something happen to my taste also. Things just did not taste as they previously did, like I knew I was eating chicken but it did not taste like chicken. It didn't taste bad just not right. Spicy foods were a bit better. I lived off of Slim Jims and cheap frozen pizza for a couple of years, they were the only things that tasted right. Now things are back to normal and I am back to eating my husbands delicious, healthy food.

Hi, Nani5. I also have terrible dry mouth from the meds, but I don't believe I have ever felt a burning sensation. I have had numbness and tingling of the tongue. I do have horrific nerve pain from the MS, however, and I use Lyrica for temporary relief but it makes me very loopy so the dr. gave me Kepra to try to prevent it or at least to reduce the intensity. It seems to be working.

Hi Nani,

I'm sorry you are dealing with this - I get it too.

At it's worst, it it drives me to distraction and stops me sleeping. It comes and goes in phases for me. I don't know if you are that 'special' age ( I'm 48 ) but it can be hormonal as well as neurological and other causes.

Sucking ice pops or licking ice cream in a cone can help to numb it temporarily ( and is a good excuse for a treat ! ) Angela x
