gabapentin 600 mg for sudden twinges of possible trigeminal neuralgia (tgn) but mouth has gone ok, stupid me. not ALL GONE

I wear an upper denture & felt the first twinge in my upper left jaw, the place where my tng usually starts spreading from. Was doing laundry when i felt it again. went upstairs, removed denture, took 600 mg gabapentin, waited, did not finish coffee, sipped water, felt twinges again but continued putting laundry, using cane, fearful of gabapentin balance side effects, did everything, folded, put away. Pain is gone but my 3 hours later my mouth feels numb on the inside. the tongue is numb. Is this a side effect of gabapentin, of my ms (have 2cndry progrssive since unofficially 1989, officially 1994). Or a possible symptom of covid? Though no fever. ...

I am scared of eating now without the denture and a numb mouth. Haven't eaten anything yet today. Thanks for reading, sorry about typos.

Thank you, no longer think it was TN, never spread to my face. And pain mostly disapoeared. Best to all of you, ❤️ you all.

300 mg after it started again, with denture, seemed ok till 3 hours later figured i should eat somehow, so pulverized potato soup, carrots, potato, parsley, frozen, nuked, added milk, and was able to sip liquid but opening mouth to wide aroused fresh starbursts of pain.

so i guess it is tn after all. sigh. took another 300 mg but did take multivitamin now i've eaten a bit, stored rest in fridge, added baby food to my fresh direct order.

not looking forward to brushing teeth tonight.

how do i tag with with trigeminal neuralgia?

I’m so sorry that you are dealing with trigeminal neuralgia. While I don’t know anything about gabapentin side effects, I do know about eating when your mouth is numb. Please don’t have anything that requires chewing. Eat soft foods like yogurt and cottage cheese. When your mouth is numb you can be biting your tongue or cheek and not feel it. My dad was a dentist and told me stories about what damage can be done when people ate before the novacaine wore off. I wish you the very best.

G'day, am I correct that you have trigeminal. Assuming yes, I hate to mention this botany drug is not going tt]o break the pain, I know this having had it on both sides of my face for many years. The only thing that broke it was "cyberknife" surgery which only last 5 years and be done 5 times in a lifetime. so enjoy the pain and learn to come to terms with it. There really is no other way,

Thanks again, good advice about not eating with a numb mouth. The next day everything was weurdly better. Did order lots of soup from Fresh Direct just in case something went wrong again. Thank you fir taking the time to read and help. Best.

I think I would call my neuro, ekelks. At least, talk to his/her nurse and get their thoughts. Prayers for you being lifted now!

Thank you all. Today no more signs of tng, so am thinking it's just a denture problem... numbness gone too. Very grateful to all of you for taking the time to read and reply. Hope you are all keeping well.

I'm sad to hear you're having both those TN pains (mine's on my left side, too) and the subsequent numbness in your mouth, ekelks. I take a total of 2,400 mg. of gabapentin a day, divided into two doses, but I've never experienced numbness from the medicine. I used to get left-sided tooth pain in different places, but my dentists never found anything problematic. Since I've been on gabapentin, I've had almost none of that pain. I walk with a cane, though usually just outside, when there are hills and uneven surfaces. Wishing you a swift recovery and a cessation of these symptoms.

Thank you, I think it was not TN this time, it never spread to my face as it normally does. My mouth's no longer numb, I have been able to eat. Thank you for writing. Best,

of course i was wrong it is tn and i am spaced out on gabapentin. same as always only this time trying to be careful, not talking, eating liquids, soup, puree...i am so bloody hungry. eating to take multivitamin, opening mouth wide, that started it up...but clinging tonsomething, letting thenpain pass, works.

like in a western, when they take out a bullet.., only can't clench teeth:)

i've taken 900mg gabapentin a day for a couple of years and never experienced mouth numbness, but it could be a side effect, i'm not sure. have you phoned your primary care?

Hi, haven't called anyone. Speaking sets it off. Looked up side effects first thing and didn't see that. But the numbness seems to have gone. This is now day 7 I think. This time around it's playing hide and seek, I think it's gone and suddenly it's back, but very happy it hasn't spread, kind of weird that. Maybe it's not technically tn if it hasn't spread up my cheek and around my chin, Otoh maybe gabapentin immediately pre-empted that,,,?

I haven't read all the replies yet. Forgive me.. I would definitely contact your "Nuero" and tell him what's going on . Perhaps there is another Medication he might prescribe that wouldn't have your side affects. Or reduce the dosage to 200mg. Maybe do some research on the internet Gabapentin or meds with similar benefits without your side affects.
