Did your dentist take xrays? I have had bruxism in the past and it is extremely painful. It showed on dental xrays, apparently I clench my jaw and was\am unaware of it. I bought a good otc mouth guard that I will wear when I feel anything starting, some simple jaw exercises are helpful too.

No X-rays. Scheduled to go back for cleaning, xrays

I clench my teeth, too. You're right, it can make your teeth and jaw ache. I have a night guard and it really does seem to help.

There's a painful condition called trigeminal neuralgia that can go along with MS. There is medication that can help. Call your neuro and tell them you have facial pain.

Yes. Like CatsandCars said, it's trigeminal neuralgia, a new phrase to add to your growing repertoire of big words that most people have never heard of. Like everything else related to MS, it can be mild or severe, chronic or intermittent. I'm not a drinker, but I wound up using moonshine to numb my mouth when it got bad. Fortunately, the whole episode only lasted a few weeks for me and (knock on wood) hasn't come back. Please call your neuro.

Have you been screened for trigeminal neuralgia? It can present differently but in my case I would experience many daily episodes of 10 to 20 seconds of terrible pain that felt like it was coming from tooth roots. It's a neurologic condition that can be controlled with medication . I started with my dentist and an oral specialist (neither of whom could help) who then referred me to a neurologist who could help.

Search trigeminal neuralgia on-line and see if it's worth following up .

Good luck!

I am sorry you are dealing with facial pain. It is a good idea to start with your dentist or an oral-facial specialist to rule out TMJ, bruxism, etc. At the same time, let your Neuro know what is going on. Not all neurological facial pain is trigeminal neuralgia. The Facial Pain Association at facepain.org has excellent info, including pain due to MS. If your pain is diagnosed as neurological, there are very effective meds for atypical facial pain, and a physical therapist that specializes in this type of pain can work wonders. Hope this helps. Wishing you the best.

i have trigeminal neuralgia, or as i call it "stabbing face pain." it strikes when it feels like it. for me it's mostly on the right side, my whole face on the outside, so to speak. it's horrible, but not dangerous.
