Heat and MS

I would like to know how Heat affects the MSers on this site.

It can make me slow and sluggish but in all I think I handle heat fairly well.

I use cooling products to help me as I am in the extreme Louisiana most everyday at length.

It makes me miserable, MSCoach50 ! However, I am in pain with cold weather! That’s the main reason that I moved from the Northeast to the Southwest. :-D

Whew! I use cooling products… Sometimes even in the house with the AC on when the temperature outside is 100! I feel great outside until the temperature gets to be about 79… Then I’m OK if I’m in the shade but when the heat and humidity rise here in Virginia, it is a sauna. If I can stay in a pool or a lake or a river that is cooler than the outside temperature… I can do pretty well but just hanging around outside and trying to get things done in the yard. I am not great , It makes me feel very weak and sluggish. I love the fall and the spring and I’m even fine in the winter… My body can always get warm.. Ironically, I can even take the heat when is not accompanied with the humidity.. maybe it’s because I’m a was originally born in West Texas.

Heat wipes me out completely, and it doesn't take much. I keep my house at 63 in the summer and 58 in the winter, although with 100-degree outside temps my AC isn't doing a very good job. I have to avoid direct sun all summer, so I'm only outside if the porch is in the shade and there's a good breeze blowing. I used to do okay if I was in water, but it's been nearly 40 years since I had easy access to a pool or clean creek. I just don't go anywhere during the summer months unless it's absolutely necessary. My family visits me, and I get my groceries delivered.

I can't stand it as it wipes me out.

Me, too. I love cutting our lawn on a lawn tractor, but on a hot day, I may not be able to finish (large lot), and it wipes me out for hours afterward. Gotta be careful not to overdo it.

I never thoght that I'd miss cutting the lawn but I do.

I just put on my headphones connected to my music stick, and I am in seventh heaven when cutting the grass. Unfortunately, I sometimes am enjoying it so much, I forget how hot I am getting.

I use an MP3 player with a little "Wonderboom" speaker while doing my artwork.

I love that thing!

I've been singing in choirs since 5th grade and I love it. I am thinking about having " A song in my heart and a smile on my face " on my tombstone.

My most requested song is "STOP THAT!"

That might end up on my tombstone if I don't quit howling.😂😂

It makes me feel weak, as if I'm melting like the witch in the Wizard of Oz. Can't stand it.

I start to walk sideways if I am in heat for too long. Not a fan of heat, wipes me out.

My region is hot and humid in summer. I'm okay for a while if I'm in the shade and the air is moving and not exerting myself, but otherwise spaghetti legs and exhausted. And any exertion in heat: red-faced, migraine, fatigue.

I have PPMS. However, I seem to be different in that for some reason if my skin is exposed I get the chills. You can easily spot me because I am the one wearing long sleved shirts in August.

My legs don't work. I cool off and they work again. But only when I get really hot. or even when I have a fever!

I don't do well in the cold, so I moved from Philadelphia PA to Atlanta GA 10 years ago. But, now the heat is really bothering me. I use cooling equipment, I stay indoors a lot. I've finally learn that I must be a little chilly for my nerves to be good. If I'm comfortable, my nerves get too hot. 🙁

As another put it, I have spaghetti legs, weakness overall, nausea and vomiting. Does anyone else vomit when your body heats up? Even having a fever causes me to vomit. I live in coastal SC, so I stay indoors in the A/C when it's hot. I found that I enjoy doing 1000 piece jigsaw puzzles.

I get light headed/dizzy and weak. The heat hasn’t been bothering me as much the last year or so, not sure why, but I’ll take it! I’m in Southern California, so hot and dry. I feel like hot and humid is worse for me.

Anything over 78 will stop me from controlling my movements. Last heat dome event left me in this wheelchair.

Thanks for all your responses, I really appreciate it. I am a High School Football Coach with PPMS who was in a mobile scooter 3 years ago. I couldn’t Coach and it made me want it even more. So I have been in PT/OT since 4X a week since and built my strength up where a can walk again. Last year I returned to the field and struggled with the heat but made it work. This year I am using cooling products that really seem to work for me but when I don’t use them I overheat and have a lot of trouble

I won’t quit Coaching again - it brings me too much joy helping build young men into men. But I will also stay properly equipped with Cooling Equipment.

Thanks Again everyone!

I am not hugely affected by much, but heat is my Achilles heel. If I get overheated I'm down for hours, if not a day or two.

I can't handle the heat, never mind the humidity. I'm in the Boston area and our current weather pattern is hot and humid. Tropical humidity, temps in the 80s and 90s for a couple of weeks, maybe more. I'm a mess. I only have an air conditioner in one room, and it's a fairly open room. I do have an ice vest, which can help. It's been too hot to even take a walk, not that I feel capable of doing that anyway. I feel like my poor memory is even worse; I'm too hot to even think!

I am bothered by heat but sometimes don't notice problems until the next day when I am utterly exhausted. My son says I am like Goldilocks....It is too hot, too cold....and I want just right! Good luck with your coaching, I hope you can continue for a long time.

Forgive the late reply. I can barely stand when over heated. I'm in Mississippi, just across the river from you. Southern heat is a nightmare, isn't it? Amazon carries a lot of cooling products. The MSAA has cooling products too.
