Heat and a migraine

Hello everyone! It was very hot here yesterday, about 93 degrees. I got way too hot, as I’m sure you can relate. I struggled to get any sleep last night and at some point I felt nauseous and had a wicked migraine headache. I just suffered through the night, until finally at 5:00 I made my coffee. Of course, I felt better. I forgot that any caffeine will usually help me with my infrequent migraines! If only I had remembered in the middle of the night, I might have felt relief sooner! I was reminded that MS and high heat are NOT a great combination. I sure hope you are all doing okay with any heat related changes in your life. Much love to you, Kelly

Dear Kelly, I empathize. During a week of high humidity and temperatures in the 80s (that felt like 90s) and 90s (that felt like 100s), I began each day with pain behind my eyes that moved into my head, even waking me at night. When I realized that caffeine, darkened rooms, and as little outside activity as possible eased the pain, I made the connection. Now, when the sun leaps over the horizon and the windows admit too much light, I pull the shades. Going outside to tend the hens and the garden, I wear a broad brimmed hat and dark glasses and stay in the shade as much as possible. Though I was born and raised in Southern California, I never was a beach goer -- a day at the beach always left me with a headache. Now, I realize it's migraine that I can tame by being careful outside, shading my eyes from bright light and glare, and avoiding the heat. I'm glad you are feeling better, more rested, and taking precautions. Enjoy your summer! Hugs, Linda

Thanks, Linda. Yes, I am keeping the shades down today. Absolutely. It is difficult to avoid bright sunshine when we enjoy being outdoors, but necessary to minimize the damage. I hope you have been doing well.

I remember them well, and found that cool, darkened rooms were best, without noise. The vomiting and nausea were helped with peppermint. Sorry you are experiencing them I think all ms sufferer’s long for cooler not cold weather. I hope you soon recover, love and hugs Jimeka 🤗

Aww, I'm sorry! I've had headaches for 3 days now and didn't realize it could be the heat. Don't you hate when you forget coffee works?! 🤦‍♀️ I hope you get some good sleep tonight! I've been adding some magnesium at bedtime too.

Good idea, I will try it!

Maybe cooling gear would be helpful? I've never thought of that before, but it might be genius. It also might be too late by the time the pain begins. Just throwing that out there 🤔 If I'm in pain on the couch at 2am anyway, might as well try it. If I get to the nausea point, it's hard to drink coffee 🤢 Perhaps this thread will end up being a great migraine brain storm!

I think it would work to prevent the headache. My problem was I was at the pool and I got too much sun. I stayed in the water, but I guess it was just too sunny for me! I should know better, right? I even had a hat on. And sunglasses. I was floating on a big tube, it is so much fun! I will be much more careful in the future.

My SIL suffers from migraines too. I will try to remember to ask her what she does when I see her next.

That’s rough!!! I hope you can stay cooler today. This heat is awful! I’m glad your migraine subsided. I’m like you. If stuff hits me at night I forget how to resolve it and suffer longer than needed.

Most of my headaches, if I don't take something as soon as I feel it coming on, will lead to nausea. Is that migraine? I guess that's how I think of it anyway. I don't do caffeine anymore so that wouldn't be of help🙁

I think my heat intolerance is getting worse, too much sun or heat will suck the life out of me! Leaves me weak and barely able to move until I've cooled down.

I hope you feel better today and get some sleep tonight Amore55

I have been doing good, thanks for asking. The new meds for urine leakage are working great now that I am taking them twice a day! So glad I asked my neuro for something to help!

Received the polar vest this week, it helps, but you still can't push the limits in the heat. The vest gives you more time in the heat, but know your limits. Mine is that my mouth goes numb, at that point it's in the house for a cool shower and cold drinks, hydration is a must! If I don't heed that warning, my left leg gives up, eyes cross, and on and on. I prefer being able to walk in the house, scooching on my behind goes through jeans in no time!

Yes, even though I have been doing great for quite awhile, my mouth tingles in the evening. It is a strange feeling. I have to remember my limitations. Thanks for sharing.

I asked my SIL what she does and she doesn't do anything but darken the room & ride it out for 2 days.

I hope you find something to help.

I just need to remember to get out early to pull weeds out of the tomatoes & cucumbers. That's all the garden I planted this year. got to go love ya take care.

The heat really gets to me too. A cooling vest helps. Is also got ice packs that go around your neck which are very helpful. If I don’t cool myself down and stay out of direct sun my legs are like noodles until I cool off. I also get migraines frequently, especially in the heat, but Sumatriptan, which is oral Imitrex, takes it away within 30 minutes. Everyone with MS needs to be careful in the heat! My neurologist told me a half a degree increase in your core body temperature will exacerbate whatever symptoms you have. So be kind to yourself and stay cool.
