Colonoscopy

I am worried about anesthesia causing exacerbation. The last time I was put under I was out of it for 2 months (according to my husband). I had ill effects 40 years ago with anesthesia also. They have "noted" this but it does not make me feel any less anxious.

Prayers are going out to you. G-D will take care of you.

Oh, dear. Sending good wishes to you. I briefly came to while I was getting an appendectomy, but all I remember is the doctor telling me to go back to sleep. My son had trouble coming out of the anesthesia, though, during his, and that was pretty scary for those of us waiting.

I can tell you about my experience when I had a colonoscopy. Typically, the procedure itself doesn't take very long (under 30 minutes). I was given a drug that put me in a twilight sleep, much better than full on anesthesia, and immediately after the procedure, I was awake and alert and felt refreshed like I just had a good nap. I was very surprised, because in the past, I have had trouble coming out of general anesthesia after surgery. The drug I was given was nowhere near as strong as the anesthesia used for surgery.

You should discuss your concerns with the GI doctor who is doing the colonoscopy, and also with the anesthetist who should come to talk to you prior to the procedure, so you can let them know. Hopefully, they can put your mind at ease. Hope all goes well. 🙂

I had one just a couple months ago and it was the same. The first time I had one, eight years ago I was out more and super groggy afterwards. This time it was completely different.

It's a short nap on light sedation.

They usually use propafol sedation fir quick procedures that may be different than what you've had before. Whenever I get anything done, the anesthesiologist will come in and talk to me and ask about previous issues with anesthesia and answer my questions. So you'll have a chance to talk to them before the procedure.

I just had my colonoscopy last week. And they did use the propofol… It was lovely. No hangover afterwards and as others have said it was just like having a lovely nap. When they tell you not to drive for the next 12 hours, there is good reason for that as we had planned to take a trip less than 12 hours after and this navigator was having a tough time… Lol.!

I have never had anesthesia for a colonoscopy. I hope you can find a work around.

My husband said he also had no anesthesia. I guess it might be an option

I understand your concerns as I share them. When I sleep really deep my body basically freezes because my spasticity gets so bad and I worried I wouldn’t even be able to get in the car after. While I know we are all different I can offer you this consolation … I’ve had two this year with no complications. Also, I will have my third in a few months so hopefully it will go okay too and for you as well 🤞
