Here's the most recent tale from the old woman at Wobbly Corners. You may remember one of the tales written by A.A, Milne. Winnie the Pooh and Piglet were invited to a birthday party, and of course they wanted to bring a gift. Winnie the Pooh started off with a pot of honey and Piglet with a large lovely balloon. On the way, Pooh's gift of honey vanished as he and Piglet walked the path through the woods. Piglet tripped and popped the lovely balloon but undeterred, the pair continued on, putting the fragments of balloon inside the empty honey jar...a fine gift indeed.
Yesterday was my neighbor's birthday. She's very fond of chocolate, so during the eclipse, I baked a chocolate cake, frosting it with more chocolate. This morning, as I came home from volunteering, I saw her truck leaving on an errand. I changed my clothes and set off for her home, down the road and through the field with the intention to surprise her with the cake and a very small gift. I carried the offerings in a plastic bag, intending to hang it from the handle on her door. Halfway there (it's about a half mile), I stepped in a puddle slick with our red clay (thanks to recent rains, nice and soft) and went down, birthday surprise and all. I got up, continued on, and left the mud splattered gift as I intended. And pondering my similarity to Pooh and his friend.
My neighbor texted me later to say that she'd been licking frosting off the container lid (left there when the cake flipped over) and was sure that the crumbled cake would be fine served with the ice cream she'd bought on her morning errand. So as in the story of Pooh and Piglet, there's a happy ending here as well.
This means there's another day of cleanup at Wobbly Corners, this time my muddy jeans and sneakers. One of these days maybe I'll master the art of walking without tripping. I obviously need a lot of practice,
