New here!

Hello all, I'm new here and look forward to meeting you and getting some more information about dealing with MS. I was diagnosed in August of 2022, so I am still getting used to all the things that I have to deal with. As it is now I am only having fatigue and balance issues, but nothing extra. I am a believer in holistic treatment, and it has worked well for me. I have had very bad experiences with pharmaceutical products in the past. My neurologist is very surprised with how well it is working for me. I am willing to share what is working and what my research has shown me.

Welcome to a wonderful forum! We have all kinds on here, and in addition to getting valuable information you'll also find many reasons to laugh.

At 58, I wasn't diagnosed until 3 years ago, but I've been dealing with all this most of my life. As a result, the drugs weren't available to me, and I treated my symptoms with OTC meds and herbal remedies. I'm pleased with how well I've gotten along, so keep doing whatever works for you!

Which herbal remedies worked for you? I am interested in the option of supplementing meds with natural options.

I swear by a tea that I make with turmeric, ginger, yarrow, and wood betony. The last 2 items have NOT been tested or proven safe for long-term consumption, but I'm willing to take the risk. As a life-long country girl-slash-redneck/hillbilly, they're plants that I grew up using. I'm willing to accept that it might all be in my head, but I've seen a noticeable difference when I don't drink the tea.

It took about 2 weeks to build up in my system, and I drink about a quart a day for 4 days, stop for a day or two, then drink it again for 4 days. If I stop for longer than 2 days, I have a lot more pain, stiffness, and weakness all over my body. I've also found that if I don't use a heating pad or hot water bottle on my lower back every single day then I have extensive hip & leg pain the following day, regardless of my level of activity.

If you can stomach the tea, and I usually mix a flavored OTC herbal tea with mine to mask the "dried hay" flavor, I'd suggest just researching the anti-inflammatory herbs that are native to your area and try a couple of them. Make sure that they won't interfere with any drugs you take, and be aware that many natural herbs are NOT safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Hello Stabal and welcome to the family. We are happy you have found us! You will never be alone now and there will always be someone to reach out to and get answer questions you have. I am please holistic medicine is working for you. But please, please if you start noticing more disability talk to your neurologist about alternatives. I have had MS for over 25 years and wish I would have been able to start some of the great pharmaceuticals on the market today earlier as it would have decreased my disability level. I started with balance issues like yourself and and today I can barely walk. Most of the time around the house I can use an upright walker for short periods of time and other than that I'm eit her in a wheelchair or an electric scooter. I can no longer enjoy my life's Passion which is riding horses and cannot participate in any sports I used to enjoy. I now sit and look out the window at the outdoors I used to live in, working the farm, riding horses, playing sports, backpacking, swimming, and everything else an old country girl enjoyed doing. Simply taking a walk or working in a garden is completely beyond the scope of my body's ability today. Don't allow MS to make you a prisoner in your own body. Fight it with every ounce of will power you have and every medical advance on the market. Remember together, we the whole MS community, including the researchers and scientists, are stronger! I feel your pain. Very much. The most thing I miss is riding! But I am determined to keep building up my muscles so I can ride again. Even if only for an hour. I miss the sports but like AH I’m not as young as I used to be 😂. As for the swimming I don’t have a pool but i hear water arobics are really helpful! Best wishes in all you do! Hey, next time you are looking out your window imagine some crazy girl dancing trying to make you laugh foot drop adds extra fun 🤩

Hi Fancy! Thanks for the reply, I enjoyed it a lot! I am still researching the holistic side of things, but I did find someone who is suggesting using Pine Pollen. I have not tried it simply because several research articles say that it is an immune system booster. For us, those that suffer with autoimmune system issues, that can be a very bad thing. It will increase the attacks on the myelin sheath and cause further damage. I am staying away from that and will send the information to the person the suggested it. It wasn't anyone here, it was on another forum.

So far medicinal mushrooms are working fine. I did a lot of research on them and found that Lions Mane works best for repairing the Myelin damage. The only issue is that, because of the on-going attacks by the immune system it has to be used consistently every day. I use a tincture and it seems to help. I also use a celery juice drink to help with the inflammation. I found out, the hard way, that I need to limit it to 4 cups throughout the day. Any more tends to give a laxative effect.

NOTE: I had to correct some spelling errors. That's what I get for using my cell phone for typing out messages. 😅

My son recommended the lions mane to me. I asked my Neuro, he said go ahead. I’ve been taking 2daily for almost 2 months. Paige on TikTok @msfighter101 also takes it. She said she can tell a difference but it took several months to build up.

It can take a while to build up, the question is what form do you take it in? I use a liquid tincture since it is more readily absorbed into the system and starts to works faster. Also, the place you get it from needs to use the natural, organic fruiting body of the mushroom.
