heat or baclofen?

Bad day today. 85 f at noon. Was pulling electronet fence down by the river. Felt a little drained and mild dizzy. Dropped fencing and made it back to the shade of the tractor to sit on ground and stretch. I called my son inlaw and talked for 30 minutes or so. Ended call and put phone in pocket. I then got to my feet and was very dizzy. Woke up on ground, talking to my son inlaw… at least I thought I was. Phone was in pocket. Lol! Of course I’ll be calling care team in morning. But, anyone have similar experiences? Is this the MS heat symptom? Or has it been experienced with the baclofen?

hi. I think heat but I know nothing of baclofen. This sounds like my episodes of heat exhaustion. I am slowly learning the signs that I need to rest. I drink tons of water when this happens and it seems to help. Overdoing is really rough. It does sound like you were doing a lot and your body just said nope. I hope you figure it out! Best of luck with everything you do 🙂

I’m going to agree with you! Thank you for responding. After I posted I tried going back out at 82 f. Same fatigue and feeling ill. After sun set and temp dropped to 72 f, I was able to comfortably feed the horses and collect eggs. Tomorrow, first off, I’m recharging the A/C in the tractor!

Good idea. You may need to change your routine a bit for summer or temporarily give up certain activities.

I fed the horses in the morning and then at sunset. But on really hot days I had to get someone else to help. 72 is divine! Lol. Best wishes!

Heat can give me "brain melt". I feel like with baclofen, adequate hydration is more of a challenge, but it could just be me. I'm going to say it's both, but mostly heat.

Too much baclofen made my limbs feel like rubber,  irhunter . I use baclofen for my left leg spasms but it was causing abdominal pain so I stopped using it. I am now using magnesium malate and it seems to be helping. Plus, I don’t have any abdominal pain. Let your medical professional know of this latest development. Keep Smiling. :-D

Thank you. I’m calling in as soon as they open. Abdominal pain near liver? I feel a little. I’ve been using magnesium for years for lumbar spasms. I’m heading out before dawn to finish yesterday’s work. The river is literally lapping at the banks! Only 42 f right now…

No, it was my spleen, and an ovary, irhunter . The liver, gallbladder, and intestines were all okay. 42 f? That’s refreshing! It’s 81 f right here in Arizona, and we’re expecting to hit 100 f before the end of May! Sending warm breezes to you but not too warm! Magnesium malate is working for me so far, along with stretching. :-D

I worked the Sonora Desert between Tucson and Sells from 2000-2008. That’s when RRMS started. Longest day time tracking was 14 miles. My hands would swell up so tight that the long sleeve cuffs would leave nasty rings around my wrists. Never felt like I do now in just 85f for 30 minutes! I tested myself yesterday…. Pre dawn I felt great but once again, by 10 am in the sun, strength was drained and vertigo began. I didn’t push it!

There are things on mymsaa.org that can help keep you cool, irhunter . Take a look. I believe that you can apply for assistance to get a cool vest for little to no cost to you. I moved to AZ from MA a year ago because I couldn’t handle the cold winters anymore. Thank goodness for AC because the summers here are HOT! Keep Smiling, and do take it easy, my friend! :-D

Thank You Looking at thermapperal now. The wet t-shirt worked this morning but a bit uncomfortable with the 40 f water! I admit I do miss many aspects of Tucson but not enough to leave the far north. Enjoy!

It is a huge lifestyle change, irhunter ! We have family here and after visiting them for many years, we decided to join them. :-D

I had to take baclofen the other day after not taking any for almost a year & I had terrible abdominal pain & nausea & dizziness. That has happened twice so I'm not taking it anymore.

carolek572 profile image
carolek572CommunityAmbassador in reply tohairbrain4

Did you let your medical professional know about this,  hairbrain4 ? Be well :-D

irhunter profile image
irhunter in reply tocarolek572

Yup. Not uncommon. So I began three days of self testing. Here’s what I’ve learned: 78 f and below, in direct sunlight I can tolerate. In the shade, or tractor cab, working hard, I’m symptom free up to 85 f or so. BUT, as soon as I step into sun, strength drains and vertigo will start shorty thereafter. This is wild considering I was a hard charging Border Patrol Agent in the Sonoran Desert during the early part of my career! So, Thermaperal vest arrives today, but storms and cooler temps for next week. I’ll be ready for the heat when it returns!

Thank you for your service, irhunter ! I live about 40 minutes from the Mexican border, and I worry about the BPA constantly, and the situation that currently is! You pretty much are aware of your limitations, and it’s a good thing. We are our best advocates! Keep Smiling :-D

Not yet as it just happened this week. I see my neuro in 3 weeks & will tell her then. In the mean time I won't be taking anymore baclofen.

oh cowboy take cover 61 by 9 am 80 by 12 pm . Heat ! It’s the heat . I’m a farmer in Colorado. . Up until 3 years ago I could handle the heat . Started passing out harvesting corn not once 3 times . Thought the orchard would be cooler . Nope . Get your gear to keep you cool . Beer don’t work it makes it worse .

I’m pulling fence lines before river tops banks today. Just read your reply. 42 f pre dawn and I’m working fine in a tshirt. Last year heat was no problem. Now I need to adapt. Thank you!

Dawn on the banks of the Kettle River!

Hurray your feeling better . The heat sneaks up on us if we aren’t paying attention . I have to get out earlier to the fields then in the house by 10 am . . Hydro water pack filled with ice. Lays along my spine + water challenge. Neck fan ! Game changer . And it’s a charging one . Cool air ! Thank goodness I don’t have to pull pipe this year . I do have 1800 peach trees I’m currently doctoring and repainting. Planting the field . Every year the 5 acres of garden is now down to acre . Still have our commercial gardens. Just not around the house .

Beautiful orchard! Hand lines! Last year, before diagnosed with SPMS, was the first year that I had to hire local boys to lay and move hand lines. I could only do 3 or 4 pipes at a time and early in the day. Doubt I could do 2 today. I was thinking I was getting old, but now I can see what is happening. I’ve still have my desert gear, time to pull it out of retirement! Thank you for responding!

Could be a combination of a whole heap of things - but one thing you haven't mentioned is blood pressure issues - and feeling intermittently dizzy, especially when you go from sitting or lying to standing can be a sign of problems with fluctuating blood pressure - e.g. postural orthostatic tachycardia or similar. Suggest you get properly checked out - 85F is not extremely hot unless working in full sun with no hat etc. Plus, if you don't drink enough when working in warmer weather it can affect your blood pressure and cause it to drop through dehydration.

irhunter in reply toFrances_B

it’s heat. Tried a ‘controlled’ exposure yesterday. Symptoms reappeared so took bp… 117/71. All symptoms went away after cooling down. Then being crazy, like I am. I went back out around 4 pm only to have it reappear after about 30 minutes. Thank you.

Frances_B profile image
Frances_B in reply toirhunter

That's good that you checked - it's time now to investigate cooling vests and hats etc. However, I think it would still be a good idea to talk to your PCP about it next time you see them.

I take Baclofen everyday and never had a problem. Heat has done me in many times, I come to on the ground after passing out because I don't realize I'm overheated.

I’ve has episodes I just hit the ground and can’t move so scary can’t talk throwing up shaking sweat pouring out of me . Oh Cripes!!!! Summer is here Again/ winter is painful. I know I’m young but I think it’s time for an alert watch .

ouch! That’s terrible! Winds blowing today and I’m working on irrigation. I’m going to try developing a ‘wet t-shirt’ protocol. Screw MS!

I've never fainted with the heat, but that's probably only because I am close enough to get inside and sit down. In my case, heat intolerance comes on suddenly, within seconds, my legs become leaden, and my face turns brilliant red.

The only time I came close to fainting was ages ago. I was driving in my old Volvo (which lacked A.C.), on a California freeway in September. The temp on one of those electronic signs read 115. The car windows were open but it was hot inside that car. All of a sudden I became dizzy, saw huge spots in front of my eyes. I took the next off ramp, pulled into a fast food parking lot, went inside and collapsed into the nearest seat. After a bit, I went into the restroom, splashed water on my face and mopped my neck and arms with wet paper towels.

I wouldn't be diagnosed with MS for another 30 years, but ever since that time, I cannot get overheated. In high summer here heat and humidity make it almost impossible for me to be outside between 10 and 5. I'm not a rancher like you, but I grow a big vegetable garden. Anything I accomplish has to be done before 10 or after 5. Please be careful working outside in the heat.

Thank you!

I wear a white baseball cap outside. The white reflexes the sun away from your head and I can last a lot longer out there and I find a beer and 2 Advil work better than baclofen

I hate how much we have to adjust due to MS! Needing to change our schedules and do cooling measures when out in the heat. I have trouble when it is cold too, my leg doesn't want to function properly. It doesn't even have to be super cold for it to happen. Fortunately, I work indoors. I agree you should get checked out for blood pressure or other heart trouble just to be sure.

I have a small 10 acre place with 1/4 acre or so planted orchard. Its going to sit uncared for this summer as the pain in my body is to much. This past two weeks I have become dizzy and fell Saturday. It wasnt hot. The neurologist I saw did actually find I have orthostatic intolerance and told me to get to the cardio (again...) . This morning I am quite dizzy. Be careful .

irhunter profile image
irhunter in reply toDan_NY

So sorry to hear Dan! I hope it resolves for you! Thank you, I will be now.

I also suffer heat intolerance very much and although never had that kind of reaction to Baclofen, it does seem to increase my heat intolerance

Neworleanslady profile image

I’ve had significant physical weakness with baclofen. Not really any cognitive issues though.

Heat is our nemesis if you rest & your body cools down and you feel 1000 times better it was because of heat. I can tell you my experience with baclofen is when I took higher doses. It made my legs feel like spaghetti, and I felt like throwing up so needless to say I do not take it. I would imagine the combination could make you feel pretty bad

Seeing as you are a farmer and you work in the fields my recommendation to you would definitely be a cooling vest. It took me forever to buy one because I didn’t think it could make as much of a difference as it does but it’s huge! I have the thermapparel one and it’s a lifesaver when it’s hot (for me that’s anything over 67 degrees.

Heat + MS don't do well for me at all . I take Baclofen + haven't had reactions of any kind . Heat gives me rubber legs .

Thank you. Obviously heat…. Just sitting down inside after working in the shade. Temp is 88 f. It snuck up on me but now, forewarned , I retreated! Looking forward to the cooling vest!
