Neuro appointment

I left my neuro in shock yesterday!! Since I didn’t have as long as a commute this time (snowstorm last February) and didn’t wait at all to be seen, my speed walking test was HALF as long as last time!!

And I’ve been exercising a ton lately. I joined a class twice a week and have been walking with a friend a couple times a week as well, plus hiking with my husband.

My neuro said my muscle mass has increased significantly, my spasticity was nearly nonexistent, and my reflexes were fantastic!! He said my calves have gotten huge.

He was super impressed and said just keep it up.

Stacy, how do you exercise in so much pain?

StacyHayward profile image
StacyHayward in reply to jackiesj

Jackiesj, I’m fortunate to have my pain pretty well managed. Mostly I get tight and achy at night, but soaking in the tub helps a ton.

I’ve never had a ton of pain and I believe exercising has helped keep it down too. I wish everyone with MS could have minimal pain. I feel bad for those of you who suffer daily.

Wow that was inspiring I have been a lazy slug what type of classes do you take?

StacyHayward profile image

There is a program called Refit. I believe it’s nearly nation wide. In my area it’s free. We meet at our local church for an hour twice a week. Basically it’s aerobic exercises done as choreographed dances to music.

The best part is there is no judgement. There is a huge range of body sizes, and everyone participates at a level they are comfortable with. For example, if you can’t jump, you just try to lift your heels.

The first day was hard, I had to sit out about 20 minutes. But now I can get through the whole class and I can actually do some jumping again!!!

However, I have to be careful not to get too hot, and at the end of class we gather for a positive thought message. After sitting for that I can barely walk, sometimes I crawl. So it’s not like I’m healed or anything, but while I’m exercising my body does pretty good.

Bella is a golden doodle who is only 1yo and has so much energy. I sometimes think what was I doing getting a puppy after the loss of my last dog who was 13 and energy was much more like mine lol.

That's awesome Stacy! I've been a Pilates instructor for 23 years and I have been doing Pilates myself for 28 years. It has been my savior. My body is strong even now that I am 60. All the stretching I do helps keep the pain and the spasticity at a very manageable level. As everyone else has said, just keep going. There is that annoying saying, Just Do It.
