My husband I went to Alaska a while back. He found several projects for me to make, and I finally got around to doing this one. The cutting was incredibly tedious, but he’s thrilled.

Hubby spent some of his childhood there and dearly loved it. It’s changed quite a bit since he lived there, but it’s still stunning.

My brother lives in Anchorage. We grew up in Fairbanks. I hear it's changed Alot. But you really can't take away the wonder and beauty of it!🤗💕🌠

Beautiful! Beautiful! But, what did you do? Is that some kind of reverse applique, or piecing? And, what kind of sewing machine(s) do you use? I have an old Bernina, which I have almost worn out, really! It's on life support! Thank you for sharing! You are blessing my days! A kindred spirit in more ways than one!

It looks like reverse appliqué, but one just traces the design on fusible web and transfers it to the fabric. Once fused, I just had to cut out all those little pieces and then fuse it to background fabric.

My darling husband bought me a new Pfaff and a used Bernina. I thought I adored the Pfaff until I sewed on the Bernina Aurora. What a Rolls Royce of a machine! It has a small harp, which deterred me at first, but I’m glad I tried it out. I have several machines, including the 30-plus-year-old Kenmore I bought when I wanted to learn to sew. It’s a beast, so I’ll never get rid of it. Those mechanical machines will last forever!

Great work, you’re so talented...my niece works in Alaska and she would love this, too! The more I read from you and carolek572 the more I want to try sewing, but I also see that maybe you need a lot of room to store material for this hobby? And also it may take a long time to learn. Therefore, I decided to try whittling...just a piece of wood and a knife, idk lol! 🤷🏼‍♀️

One can actually buy only what you need for a planned project instead of what many quilters do, which is to go to fabrics sales and buy something because it’s on sale, we like it, it will be made in limited quantities, and all the other excuses...I mean reasons to buy.

Is it still difficult to learn? And is it best to start on a beginner sewing machine?

The machine doesn’t matter. I actually learned to do it all by hand, and then started on my old Kenmore. You just need a straight stitch for piecing. I only had scissors and templates way back when, but a rotary mat and cutter sure are nice. Start with a really small, easy project to see how you like it. My first project was a pillow front. Coasters, doll quilts, and things like that are great. There are a ton of YouTube videos.
